Well, this is fairly straightforward. We want to get rid of the names we currently have, because we do not like them and feel they are not properly representative of the duties of the office. Apparently, a bill does not cut it, as evidenced by the Supreme Court's decision on the subject. Oakvale can elaborate if necessary.

In what way are they not represenative? The purpose behind the names was to create an umbrella for all the combined efforts of several real life departments.

I wouldn't mind such changes, and I agree with Tyrion, the names are not as representative (or interesting, we can also call it that way) as they could be. Now that we are discussing this, we might as well take the chance to enact a few changes to the cabinet that were proposed some time ago. For example, does anybody remember who proposed modifying the GM's job to include the Regional Judicial Officers? Was it Griffin?

Please pass this. Time to end these silly names once and for all. In honor of Marokai.

I like these new names. I mean, "Secretary of State" sounds quite a bit better than :Secretary of External Affairs", at least IMO.

Hey everyone. If I may be so bold I'll quote my original defense of this amendment when it was a mere Act. Wink

Okay, anyway, this is fairly simple. The names of two of our Cabinet positions are utterly awful. They're bland, boring and not even particularly descriptive. "Secretary of External Affairs" sounds like a politically correct euphemism for a gardener or something.

It might seem trite but I genuinely think we'd have an easier time filling Cabinet positions, most glaringly the much-maligned "Secretary of Internal Affairs" (what's that, a plumber?) if they had more impressive sounding titles.

Renaming Secretary of External Affairs to Secretary of State should be a no-brainer. I mean, seriously, I'd love to be Secretary of State but I'd rather pull my own teeth than be responsible for "external affairs", and in all seriousness I can imagine a lot of newer players would jump at the opportunity to be Secretary of State - a position they'd presumably recognize - but be wary of a position with a technocratic, dull moniker.

In the brief discussion Sen. Nix and I had some time ago about this we were undecided over whether to rename the Internal Affairs department as Treasury or the Interior. I'm open to debate about this, but personally I think Treasury is a far stronger choice. After all, the SoIA is responsible for tedious budget stuff working out budget numbers and so on, while the Department of the Interior is largely concerned with public parks, the environment, etc, which I'm not sure would be very appealing to someone new to the game. Who wants to play a park management simulator?

I prefer Secretary of the Treasury, but keep in mind, it's not completely inclusive, as the office is responsible for a mass conglomeration of departments.  Of course, Treasury is far better than "Internal", or "Interior".

I mean, it's doable, but that'd have to be a whole 'nother thing.

Hold up a second here. The Census bureau is being added to this section of the constitution by this amendment, correct?

Do you mean that this is a new reference to the Census Bureau? The Census Bureau was already mentioned in this part of the constitution.

For some reason I thought it wasn't in there.

Anyway, wouldn't it be wiser just to authorize greater Senate authority regarding the names then to actually change the names with the amendment itself?

Yes, we could do that, but it might make it more difficult to pass.

Can't I just change the names via executive order? Who needs these mindless bills anyway?

I believe Nix issued such an executive order but the problem is that we need some consistency, both for legal reasons and for convenience.

I had thought that this was settled last year but the bill was tragically struck down by the Supreme Court.

Maybe we should give the Attorney General a Department while we are at it?

Yes, we could do that, but it might make it more difficult to pass.

On the contrary, I think it harder to pass with the names specified for differences over the exact name will kill.

You people are making a grave mistake adding the Justice DEpartment to this Article and you are ignoring the lessons of NC Yankee v. Atlasia.

There are two types of Departments, Constitutionally derived (Art VIII, SEction 2) and those derived from the SEnate's Power under Article 1 Section 4, Clause 28. The Department of Justice falls under the latter and gives the SEante much greater authority as opposed to the former. Adding it to ARticle VIII, Section 2 will reduce our flexibility to pass laws regarding the Department.
