James Schlesinger, a former chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission (August 17, 1971 to January 26, 1973), CIA Director (February 2, 1973 until July 1, 1973) Secretary of Defense (July 2, 1973 until November 19, 1975), and Secretary if Energy (August 6 1977 until August 6, 1979) passed away today at 85.

Schlesinger is today best known for, in his position as CIA Director, commissioning the 693 page report of memos called the "family jewels" about CIA misdeeds, and for arranging the first exit signs specifically for CIA headquarters (before that it had been an unconvincing impersonation of a highway research agency)
