I like making lists of random stuff and I was thinking about what this list would look like.

I think these guys would be HAVE to be on there (in no particular order):

opebo
Bushoklahoma
Alexander Hamilton
Robert Stark/LouDobbs08
JSojourner

Other strong contenders (also in no particular order):

jmfcst
Straha
NixonNow
JJ
BRTD (more so for his early days)
dazzleman
Dave Leip
Xahar
downwithdaleft
Josh22
Simfan
Libertas
Einzige
Link
Killerpollo
prophetman
Sam Spade
Gustaf
Inks (after he became a moderator)
Madhur
LanceMcSteel
Pravada (you could probably group the last three together and put them in one spot)
bgwah/Jesus (more so for his early days)
Statesrights
texasindy
Jamespol
BeccaM
Joe Republic (basically just for the one big incident)
Joe Democrat
HardRCafe
Poundingtherock
JCL
Storebought
Atheist2006
Vegetaboi
Keystone Phil
Reaganfan
nkpatel
pbrower2a
jfern
Krazen
Ogis
Willy Woz
FREEDOMNOTBUSH
Rochambeau
dcunited/cutie_15
kobidobidog
milk and cereal
CARLHAYDEN
Snowstalker
Kalwejt
Mechaman
Oldiesfreak1854
The Obamanation
RickRoll
NewYorkExpress
Derek
DWPerry
Wormyguy
Napoleon
John Engle
mypalfish
nomorelies
politicaladdict
Joshgreen
MikeyCNY
Yates
Joel
Deano

Does anyone remember that creepy libertarian guy from Alabama who I think actually ran for office a few times or that guy who signed up for the forum solely to argue in favor of legalizing beastality? Because I think those guys would be contenders too but I can't remember their names.

Who else am I missing?

JCL is controversial. BushOklahoma's thread about his sad existence is not.

How are you defining "controversial"?  Do you mean posters for whom opinion is highly polarized, like opebo?  Because that's different from the posters who everyone hates (like poundingtherock, who I think is the record holder for highest HP %age in an "opinion of" poll).

I guess I'm looking for people who spark the most conversation/debate and those tend to be people who are either deeply polarizing or strongly disliked. However, a few of the people I listed are very well liked but still managed to get themselves involved in some contentious issue(s).

Also, what was the deal with poundingtherock again?

He was an uber-Sarah Palin hack who actually wrote articles for the blog "Conservatives4Palin".  He was extremely rude to everyone who disagreed with him (which was everyone), and often accused other posters of being on welfare.

E.g.,

Morgan is completely right.

The people who take offense to it are gay people who somehow believe they are perpetually oppressed by society or their welfare-dependent Democrat Party allies who believe they are oppressed by society.

I guess the magnitude of actual impact on the forum itself that these posters have had is something that should be weighed particurly heavily, especially when it becomes time to rank the ten who make the final list.

OK, well....moderators are inevitably going to be controversial because they have power.  So Inks, for example, has to be in the top ten by your definition of controversial, but that's only because he has moderation powers.

Another category is serial sockmasters, like Atheist2006 and Vegetaboi, who've each made about a million sock accounts.  The moderators deal with those folks all the time, and so would clearly count in any "most controversial among the mods" list, but most of the sock accounts are here for about a day before they get banned, and the wider forum community isn't even aware of them.

As for others who don't fit in those categories, who you haven't already mentioned?  I don't know, I actually think you'd have to include Keystone Phil in that list of possibilities (not necessarily the top 10).  He's well liked enough now, but if we're talking integrated level of controversy over the last 10 years....he's been in a lot of feuds with other people.  For that matter, you should also list Naso.  And then the robot posters, like nkpatel and pbrower2a.  Heck, even "DC united", or whatever her name was, was controversial in her own way.  In that people complained that she didn't belong here, because she didn't actually care about politics.

The bestiality guy is kobidobidog, and I'd say that he should be on this list but I'm not convinced 'controversial' is really the right word.

Moderators can't edit signatures.  I believe all that Joe did was go into his Photobucket account (or what ever it was) and change the source of the image so that it depicted a penis.

JCL isn't controversial. Everyone pretty much has the same opinion that he sucks but he's fun to keep around.

I made the short list? Fantastic.

I think Jmfcst would be a given. I'd probably put Phil on it as well, he's at least a source of controversy for sure.

You're missing a few brash conservative and libertarian types: DWTL, milk and cereal, and CARLHAYDEN.

But yeah, controversial isn't quite the right word. Perhaps "notorious" fits better.

Oh yeah, forgot about CARLHAYDEN.  He's definitely a candidate for the long list.

But DWTL was already mentioned in the OP.

Most of us think you're not too bright.  That doesn't make you controversial, though.

By this criteria, I'm quite controversial too.

Okay, I've changed the wording from "controversial" to "notorious". Hopefully that will sit better with most of you guys. (I also gave some consideration to "infamous".)

I also added a whole bunch of names to the list. Some of them were very obvious but only came to me tonight for whatever reason. Some of them were suggestions from you folks. I even opted to put the attention whore submissions into the mix.

I think once we've collected enough names I'll create a poll to determine which names will advance to the top ten list itself.

So do you guys have any more names for me? I'm sure we're still missing some strong contenders.
