the identity-politics left is insufferable, which is what you're referring to, OP.  it has more to do with mainstream corporate liberalism than it does with any "far left".

tankies historically were communists who continued to support the ussr after they "sent the tanks" into hungary.

today it tends to be used in one of two senses; as a description for "stalinists" generally, or for commies who like khrushchev, brezhnev, and often deng xiaoping as well. going from the ones on tumblr, they also tend to be catholic and to have an extreme hatred of trans people as well.
I'm afraid any communist who supported the USSR after Stalin took over wasn't much of a communist.  Perhaps a centrally planned state-run dictatorial quasi-socialist perhaps.. but not a communist.  At it's very base communism had nothing to do with the Soviet Union except to serve as a pipe dream that everyone was to strive for (meritocratic capitalism serves the same function in the U.S.)

But that's because communism is better defined by its root word:  community.  Whereas socialism is akin to society.  Community has a friendlier, closer-knit feel to it than "society" and it is this nearly undefinable "goodness" that differentiates communism from the bastardized state socialism we've seen.

The "revolution" will be more like an evolution.  As the economy grows anemically for the foreseeable future and the return on capital remains high... it will put pressure on everyday people to begin changing their outlook and the structure of their communities in a slow movement towards what will eventually be communism.

We're already doing it with family structure.. breaking the old feudal arrangement of man brings home money and/or sustenance and woman takes care of the household to one of either individuals living alone, or a mroe communist set up where two (or more) adults live together and divide responsibilities and benefits of the household together... democratically.

That attitude change is a fundamental change in our society.  Richard Wolff remarks constantly about how the left totally ignores this.  They will cite all kinds of reasons for the breakdown of the traditional family.. almost all having to do with social movements... while ignoring the economic elephant in the room.

Meanwhile, the Republicans actually do recognize the dramatic shift.. but they hate it.  They think it's a devolution towards chaos and disorder.  The chaos and disorder is a symptom of reorganization.  Eventually a communist view of households will be predominant and will seem as natural as ever.

And this sense of fairness and equality in the household will then work its way into the economy.

Marx's "revolution" (evolution) never occurred because people demanded a bigger cut of the profit pie... but because women were forced into the workplace to keep hosuehold incomes steady and while they would have done 95% of household work prior to going out and working... now they were working but still doing 75% of the house work.

How do you think women responded?  Not well.  Depression, anxiety, a massive increase in divorce rates... and now a generation where many women just forego married life because at least on your own you can be your own person.

One of the reason corporations are so perplexed when it comes to dealing with Millennials is that Millennials (rightfully) feel entitled to having a say in how things work.  In a society where the workplace is organized like an autocratic dictatorship with a well defined hierarchical "chain of command", people wanting a say in things just doesn't jell.

In any case these are interesting times we live in.

Only if you're defining 'far left' as the traditional hard left, I think. But the so-called New Left (as you know, obviously) was all about identity politics, even if it often expressed this through an older vocabulary.

But surely that was the only definition of Communist so long as the Soviet Union was in existence?

Nah, she lives in Chicago and probably has some boring day job, most likely one of these types: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wr4y0qDYmIg

She actually went to my alma mater, lol. We might have graduated at the same time. I don't recognize her, but I'm sure she was one of those annoying people in discussion.

going from the ones on tumblr, they also tend to be catholic and to have an extreme hatred of trans people as well.

I think I've run across some of the people you're talking about, but that's still a weirdly specific subsample even in the context of tumblr.

Examples and names?

I said 'I think'. These aren't people with whom I prefer to interact.

BRTD, there's an entire Catholic subculture on tumblr, ranging from mainstream practicing Catholics to mainstream secular cultural Catholics (yes, I know; please just accept it and move on just this once) to really strident and unlikable Traditionalist Catholics to really strident and unlikable proponents of major doctrinal reform. (There are some humble and likable people in these last two groups too but not as many.)

I'm just surprised because I've gotten the impression the demographics of people who use Tumblr are basically in the categories of: 1-The same type of people who live between 35W and Hennepin Ave, 2-Feminists, although more of a Lena Dunham type than a stereotypical second-wave killjoy and 3-People who like to compile and caption porn. Or of course 4-All of the above. AKA not likely to have too many Catholics.

Probably your impression of the demographics of people who use tumblr is one of the things most likely to be self-selecting of anyone's impression of anything. Mine's self-selecting, too, but in a different way--I'm aware of the Lena Dunham types and the porn compilers but don't generally actually see them, for example.

Just check out the #CancelColbert trend. Why is everyone on the far left such an obnoxious Sensitive Sally?

I think it has nothing to do with somebody's place on the political spectrum and everything to do with that person's lack of a sense of humor. If she didn't take herself so seriously, she probably would've recognized that Colbert wasn't being offensive in the slightest.
