I acknowledge that Macklemore has talent, but it's done in a way that I can't really do anything but sort of stand at a distance and appreciate it. It's too preachy for my tastes. "Can't Hold Us", for my money, is his best song, due to a sheer focus on rhythmic gymnastics.

At least he's better than Jay-Z or Lil Wayne (this is from a former fan of both artists) at this point

I'm not a fan of Macklemore and I'm certainly not a fan of rap, but this a great song and it tells a great story behind it for LGBT rights both in and out of the video. His singing is HS aside from this song, but he's an FF overall for his stance on gay rights and overcoming his fights with drugs and alcohol.

Plenty of things have "good messages" and are also unlistenable garbage. Making an extremely safe political point I agree with (I guess?) doesn't excuse bad music for being bad music.

Precisely. I suppose it's a matter of taste - I prefer more wordplay and creativity in lyrics but others find that pretentious or annoying (if they can't decrypt the meaning). Same Love is obnoxiously straight forward. I agree with him, but the outright proselytizing makes me roll my eyes.

Horrible song.  The only song I have liked from Macklemore is "Can't Hold Us".  Although "Same Love" isn't nearly as bad as "Thrift Shop", which is one of the worst songs in the history of music, perhaps only topped by "Black and Yellow" and "Sexy and I Know It".
