Round XXXIII: November 1-November 2, 2004

Election Day is upon us! The candidates are crisscrossing the country in the final hours before Election Day. Most pundits declare it to be a coin-toss election. Polling continues to show a close race between Vice President Rudy Giuliani and Senator Joe Biden, with Governor Johnson and Congressman Kucinich drawing a respectable third and fourth place polling. All four candidates have raised a considerable amount of money over the course of the cycle and have been targeting the key states.

In recent days the revelation of the Bin Laden tape has caused heightened concerns for the country, with the terror alert level being raised. The candidates have responded the to the video by the mastermind and both President Bush and Vice President Giuliani have seen an uptick in support. Some pundits believe this will help Giuliani in the closing hours of the election, as it will compliment his campaign of experience in handling terrorism. Polls have continued to show a small, but steady lead for Giuliani throughout the entire cycle. Many pundits believe the remaining undecided will break evenly between Giuliani and Biden, with some going for Johnson.

Most pundits expect November 2nd to be a long night as polls in many states show a close contest. Fasten your seat-belts!

What's the difference between the two maps?

If it's too confusing I can take one down?

No, that's what I thought - I just wanted to clarify that I was correct in that understanding.

TV Ad: Vote Biden/Lincoln November 2 + Radio Ad Buy

JOE BIDEN: (sitting, speaking to the camera) It's been a noisy election year. I know. So I wanted to take a moment, with you, to reflect. We've got a lot of people in this country hungry for change. So why would you settle for more of the same?

In this campaign, I've forced the other candidates to acknowledge the pressing need to raise the minimum wage. I've been the only one to acknowledge the pressing need to reopen the Domestic Terrorism Task Force.

As a senator from Delaware, I can tell you that over here we may be short on square acreage, but we're not short on new ideas. From preserving our national security, revving up our economy, and making a high-quality education not a luxury but a guarantee for every child, I've got the ideas to get it done. And, I've got the record to show that I can.

In two days, America decides. You decide. We'll see you at the polls this Tuesday.

Pro-Giuliani Campaign Ad, Running in the Following States:

Even Democrats (2.0)

- Chuck Norris is on screen, leaning against a dusty truck. He speaks straight to the camera -

Lots of Americans from across the nation have announced their support for Vice President Giuliani in his campaign for President. There's been athletes, musicians, chefs, business owners, and politicians. Now, the Vice President's list of supporters has grown again. Speaking at an event in New York City, Senator Chuck Schumer - a leading Democrat in the Senate - gave his support for Vice President Giuliani.

Even Democrats are turning their backs to Senator Biden and his anti-business, pro-radicalism, appeasement policies. Americans from across the nation are recognizing that the candidate for jobs, for security, and for a better America is Rudy Giuliani. Election day is tomorrow and the choice is yours. For me, its crystal clear. My vote is going for Rudy Giuliani.

GOTV Memo from the Giuliani Campaign (November 1st-2nd)

As the Vice President’s latest as says, this is it. We’ve got two days left of this campaign but we cannot slow down. Volunteers from across the nation have been doing great. The number of responses to our canvassing efforts is way up, as is the number of donations less than $50.00. These small donations show that our phone banks are working on the local level. The Vice President wants to personally thank everyone who’s volunteered to canvass a neighborhood or work a phone bank - the campaign is set for victory because of your hard work.

Our campaign has raised more money and has much more cash on hand than the other candidates, so we’ll be doing large ad-buys nation wide. We’ve also rented out cars, vans, and buses across the nation to help get people to the polls. Volunteers are needed to drive these vehicles, as well as people to use their own vehicles to bring voters out. Compensation will be available for volunteers using their own vehicles. Local campaign chairman are going to arrange groups of volunteers to call registered voters all day on Election Day to ensure that they have gone out to vote, and make every effort to get them out if they have not done so yet.

Talking Points
- Rudy Giuliani has been a leading voice in raising the minimum wage, working to create a bipartisan bill with support from both Democratic and Republican lawmakers.
- Rudy Giuliani helped New York City and America recover from the damage of 9/11 and is ready to keep America strong and safe in the face of terrorism. (direct them to the Vice President’s response to the bin Laden tape).
- Rudy Giuliani comes from a lower-middle class family and can understand the struggles of Americans from all walks of life.
- Rudy Giuliani has represented President George W. Bush on the international stage and has strong relationships with the leaders of America’s most important allies.
- Rudy Giuliani believes that the people of Puerto Rico are capable of maintaining a strong Democracy and should be granted statehood (when talking to Latinos/Hispanics)
- Kay Hutchison has been a long time advocate of women’s rights, education reform, and affordable energy. As Vice President she will assist the President in enacting meaningful legislation in these areas.
- Joe Biden is a known plagiarist who refuses to own up to it.
- Joe Biden has made numerous off-the-cuff, rash, and inappropriate comments. One of the Senator’s outbursts at a meeting with world leaders could put the U.S. in an international crisis.
- Gary Johnson is an extremist, whose radical laissez-faire economic policies would put America on track for a Second Great Depression.
- Dennis Kucinich is a 7 year Congressman without any major legislative success. He also hasn’t served as the Ranking Member of any important committee. He is not qualified to be the President of the United States.
- Bernie Sanders has described himself as a socialist. The policies he advocates for would rapidly expand the size of government, raise taxes on all Americans, and balloon the federal deficit.

Key Quotes from Vice Presidential Giuliani Over the Course of the Campaign
“A roast in every oven, a car in every garage, and a diploma on every wall. That’s my vision for America.”
“No one should have to work three jobs to make their rent. We need to raise the minimum wage in a responsible way that will benefit all Americans.”
“Let’s bring everyone in the Coalition to Washington and plan out our strategy, going forward into Iraq and Afghanistan.”
“Believe in America”
“Safety at home, security abroad”

it’s time, let’s seal the deal
- Mary Matalin,
Campaign Director

OOC: isn't it a little ridiculous that you keep using the Schumer quote? You've changed words and quotes many, many times (the last one -> saying Clint Eastwood instead of Chuck Norris), some that could've backfired, and the rest of the players didn't use it against you (I've followed the game from the very beginning and your rivals have been very generous, believe it or not). I hope it backfires this time, because two ads using a Schumer quote where he forgot to say "Vice" in the final days of campaign looks weird (or ridiculous, yes) to me.

OOC: Isn't it a little ridiculous that you jump into the campaign and create in-depth surrogate schedules for Joe Biden during the most important point of the campaign while I'm running as Giuliani, Hutchison, Surrogates, and GOTV? I think I can take a bit of liberty with the Schumer quote to compensate, at least a little, for the immense amount of help that Biden is getting.

OOC: Why is it ridiculous? It has happened before and it'll keep happening in the future. Maybe you should've PMed some poster to help you. I doubt any other of the players would complain about it!

Of course you can do whatever you want to with the Schumer quote. I only said that, IMHO, it's a bit ridiculous because it could backfire, specially as you've made similar mistakes in the past.

TV Ad: Forward

JOE BIDEN: This November, America's at a crossroads. Now, I could have a marathon of people from the past telling you about my candidacy. But with the final ad of this campaign, we wanted to do something different. I'm Joe Biden, and you'd better believe I approve this message. (Fade out)

WOMAN: When Joe Biden came to Arizona, he invited me and other people in our community to talk about what America's tomorrow looks like. For us it means an education for our kids that they can be proud of. Joe knows that education is a promise.
Maria Gonzalez
Phoenix, AZ

MAN: Here in Ohio, we've lost more jobs than we've got. Families like mine have to pinch their pennies, but Joe is a fighter. Joe was the first to promise to raise the minimum wage so that hardworking families can make more than just ends meet. But if you watched the debate, you saw the effect his leadership had on the competition. In this campaign, and in the White House, only Joe Biden has been with us right from the start.
Kevin Blackburn
Toledo, OH

WOMAN: When terrorists aim to strike America, we know Joe Biden will hold the line and never stop fighting to protect America and our national security. And when no other candidate will even talk about what to do in Iraq, we know Joe Biden is the only honest candidate that is willing to talk straight and tell it like it is.
Jamie Giordano
Long Island, NY

MAN: So when you vote this November, you know there's only one candidate looking forward to ensure a better future for all hardworking Americans, and all of our children. We can stay standing still and stuck in the past or we can elect a President with his eye on the New American Century. And that's Joe Biden. Biden for America.
Richard McConnell
Jonesboro, AR

November 1, 7:00am

[STEPHANIE CUTTER wheels in TV to Press cabin of the campaign plane]

So, we're going to watch a little video.

Now, can anybody spot the difference?

[The TV now plays Giuliani's "Even Democrats" ad]

So, the sitting Vice President as of the final week of the campaign has taken to blatantly editing footage to create a false ad. This ad violates the decency of clean campaigning, something that Senator Biden has never considered doing and never would do. This election is about choice, and change, and voters want change more than they want a man so corrupt and scared of losing the power he so feebly grasps that he would resort to lies and distortions. We condemn Vice President Giuliani and his campaign for editing Senator Schumer's remarks and then airing them nationwide under false pretenses and a shameless flight-of-fancy.

Statement from the Giuliani Campaign
- Giuliani Campaign Deputy Spokeswoman Andrea Saul -

We've received numerous inquiries about a presentation that the Biden Campaign made to a group of media while they were on the Biden Campaign plane.

The video that Ms. Cutter played to the press on the Biden Campaign's plane is the one that is false and edited, as anyone who was actually at the October 24th event in Brooklyn can confirm. However, this is not our concern. The ad in question was made and paid for by the Chamber of Commerce. The campaign had no part in the production, planning, or compensation for the ad and has never endorsed it. This is stated multiple times in the ad, which Vice President Giuliani saw for the first time yesterday during NBC coverage of Ms. Cutter's statement. For the Biden Campaign to simply ignore the fact that the campaign had nothing to do with the ad and attack the Vice President, just shows that they are grasping at straws. It's a clearly desperate action by a campaign that is trailing in most polls to create media buzz about it in the final hours of the race.

Statement from Biden for America

When we provided the unedited footage of Senator Schumer's remarks, we had hoped in good faith that Vice President Giuliani would own up to the fact that he had broken his own promise to run a clean campaign. Obviously the Vice President of the United States is too busy looking out for himself that he forgot about the little guy in America.

His campaign claims he only recently saw the ad on television, and their press release pleads with the public to buy into their paper-thin defense of such indefensible acts. As every single reporter in the press pool knows, there were no cameras during Press Sec. Cutter's presentation. The minor fabrication by the Giuliani campaign claiming that he saw it in coverage of Sec. Cutter's presentation is proof-positive that he will lie about anything to become president.

As voters go to the polls tomorrow, they are looking for a true blue leader. The fact that VP Giuliani so criminally would pass the buck says a lot about the nature of his character and the willingness to deflect responsibility he would bring to the office of the Presidency. When Joe Biden is president, the buck will stop at his desk. A president is always held responsible and should always hold him or herself to the highest moral and ethical standards.

Statment from the Giuliani Campaign
- Giuliani Campaign Deputy Spokeswoman Andrea Saul -

The Biden Campaign attacked the Vice President today for lying about how he saw the Chamber of Commerce Ad "Even Democrats". The Biden Campaign claims that the Vice President said he was watching Ms. Cutter's statement live. However, that is not true and can clearly be seen in our last statement. In that statement I said the Vice President was watching NBC's coverage of Ms. Cutter's statement. NBC had a reporter inside the traveling press with the Biden campaign, saw Ms. Cutter's statement, then upon landing reported on it to Tom Brokaw. At that time NBC played "Even Democrats", which was when the Vice President saw the ad for the first time. This is made very clear in our last statement.

Senator George Allen

November 1st
-GOTV bus tour across the state
-Record GOTV Robocall

Hello, this is Senator George Allen. Our country is at a crossroads. We can choose to surrender in the War on Terror and enact dangerous economic policies that threaten to push us into recession. Or, we can choose to win the War on Terror, secure our nation, protect American jobs. That's the choice you get to make. Vote Rudy Giuliani for President to protect our country and strengthen our economy.

November 2nd
-GOTV across Virginia
-Rally in Richmond

Folks, we've got to make a choice. I remember where I was on 9/11 and I'm sure you all do too. I remember the fear and the concern for the future. Would our country ever be the same? We were blessed with strong leadership in the White House. Leadership that kept our country united in our time of need and kept our country safe. But Joe Biden and the Democrats threaten that leadership. Rudy Giuliani is the kind of strong leader we need to keep our country safe and our future secure. We all need to go vote and vote Rudy Giuliani for President to make sure our country is safe and united under strong leadership.
