Rudy Giuliani Debate Responses

All The Candidates: Democrats and Republicans
The North Country in New Hampshire has felt the effects of the economy, with many factories and plants closing down what can be done to bring jobs to the North Country?
I've visited New Hampshire more than any other candidate and I've spent a lot of time talking to people who've lost their jobs over the last few months and years. In order to bring jobs back to this crucial part of our country, the EPA and the Department of the Interior have to roll back their environmental regulations and allow industry to come into the area. Logging companies, maple syrup farms, and people looking to fish and hunt can come surging into the area - bringing people and capital back into New Hampshire.

To all the Candidates: Democrats and Republicans
Do you support the Patriot Act and does it go far enough?

I support the Patriot Act, because I support the protection of American lives. We as Americans must use every legal and constitutional tool in their arsenal to fight terrorism and protect their lives and liberties. Does it go far enough? Yes, I believe so. Although some personal liberties are given up, these concerns are dwarfed in comparison to the safety the Act provides to us. As someone who saw the damages of 9/11 directly, as someone who felt the pain of losing loved ones, as someone who cried in the streets of Manhattan I'll be the first person to give up my personal liberties in order to prevent another terrorist attack.

To Mayor Giuliani:
What is your plan to reduce the deficit and can it be done without raising taxes?

I've always supported a balanced budget and as President I will work towards one. But that's not something that can be achieved in one, or even two, terms. For more immediate results we need to cut spending. There's a lot of discretionary spending that we can cut from the budget, and there are a lot of tax loopholes we can close. I do not plan to raise taxes, if elected President, but I will push for the closing of numerous loopholes that may lead to some paying more in taxes. But will I raise tax rates directly? No.

George Allen Debate Responses

"What has happened in New Hampshire, and it's evident of what is continuing to happen in our country. Our economy is becoming service based and manufacturing is leaving this country. My jobs plan, and my whole platform, has been endorsed by the New Hampshire Union Leader, and that is through comprehensive tax reform, and eliminating harmful regulations. I will cut the number of regulations this nation has back to the age of Reagan."

"We need to keep America safe from terror, and being able to fight terror in this new generation is key, and the Patriot Act is absolutely the right way to do so. I think it is irresponsible that liberal Democrats want to roll back something so important to our safety, and I think the Patriot Act should not only be renewed, but it should be expanded, so that we can even more aptly fight terror."

"That is a good question, and one of the things I am worried about is entitlements. The Republican Senate put together a plan to save Medicare by reducing costs for prescription drugs, and that was the first step to reforming the program all together. I am of the belief that we need to raise the retirement age: with people living longer, its the only smart thing to do.  Along with that, I would allow partial privatization of Social Security, allowing you do with your money what you want. Allowing more freedom for the program and raising the retirement age, we will cut costs for the future while giving more healthcare choices. The future of healthcare stands with the Republican Party and I will fight for these free market reforms."

The North Country of New Hampshire is one of many areas of the country struggling at the moment. As President, I will encourage areas of our country that are struggling to move with the rest of our country to a high-tech twenty-first century economy, provide tax breaks for companies already in struggling regions to stay put, and for places like the North Country of New Hampshire and upstate Vermont to build tourist industries based on their maple syrup production, for Southeast Ohio and Western Pennsylvania to build tourism based on specific industries they have built in the past, and so on and so forth.

While I support the idea of a Patriot Act, the reality is, it has been abused by the Bush Administration to essentially create a police state. My interpretation of the Patriot would have probably been the same legislation, with a definite time-frame that could not be renewed by any method, as a tool to check the wanton spying on groups that have already been proven to have nothing to do with terrorist attacks, and even more wanton spying on legitimate opposition.

Besides the fact he has two more years of Seniority on me? If you don't mean that then I don't really see any major differences between myself and any of my fellow Democrats in this field, with the exception of Rep. Kucinich.

Before I walk off this stage tonight, I think my fellow Democrats and my Republican opponents need to give a round of applause for Vice-President Gore, who departed the race far earlier than anyone envisioned. While I wish I had his endorsement, I understand why he endorsed Senator Edwards, and I bid him (Gore) best wishes in his next pursuits.

It's great to be in Maryland like this, I mean, I've been in this state many times, to meet with officials, and even ordinary people on the street, and I know that they are dissatisfied with Washington and Bush. We need reform, in every sense of the word, Education, Defense and Poverty being key. But some of my colleagues feel that they are heroes when they cut food stamps for those too poor to afford much else, well, hate to break it to them, but you are in no way a hero for voting to cut food stamps, far from it. We need a second Great Society, one that will try its hardest to eradicate poverty and ensure that no one is left behind, and folks, that is you will get under a Biden administration.

Dec. 30th
Meet and Greet-Berlin, New Hampshire
Barnstorming-Berlin, New Hampshire

Well, we do need both Unemployment and Job subsidies in our country and in this State and county, we live in an advanced economy, with the internet coming up in stocks and importance, we need to get our unemployed jobs, whether or not Republicans actually want to do this, but regardless, I'm sure we can all agree that we don't need any more unemployment at all. How we do it is by getting Subsidies of all kinds through Congress, and also, something that Representative Kucinich has brought up, raising the minimum wage to about $10, we do need that very much, to keep people interested in jobs. I mean, you aren't going to want to stay in a job if you're barely getting paid, aren't you?

This is one issue I agree with the Republicans on, we cannot let Iran possess a Nuclear weapon, they are eyeing Israel with bloodshot eyes, and we are allies to Israel and even if we were not, we don't need people getting nuked left and right. A way to stop it is to go to the UN and start negotiations with the country to slow down their production of Nukes and eventually halt their Nuclear Program altogether, and if that fails, we will set upon Oil sanctions, though only as a drastic measure if the peace talks fail.

No, I do not support the PATRIOT Act, I respect Liberty, this country was founded upon that, in fact, Franklin stated that someone who is willing to trade Liberty for Security deserves neither, which is a statement that still holds true to this very day, ask a random teen on the street whether or not they support the Act, and they usually will respond with a resounding no. We need our privacy, and I can not say today that I support the spying on citizens in the name of fighting a terrorist, which takes entirely different tactics altogether.

NRA AND GOA JOINTLY ENDORSE GARY JOHNSON
The NRA and GOA have looked at the records of all the candidates of this presidential race, and there is only one name that stands out, a candidate that will defend the Second Amendment. That candidate is Governor Gary Johnson, who has stood for the right to bear arms in New Mexico, and will do so as president.

Dennis Kucinich Debate Answers

The fact is that we’re facing a jobs crisis in this country, and unless we make some big changes in our economy, we’re only going to see more families struggle. Our nation’s factories have been closing their doors and the only solution that Republicans seem to have is more tax breaks. Cutting taxes for the middle class is good, we all agree, but we’ve got to have more substance than that. That’s why I’m the one candidate here on this stage that is calling for a new New Deal of sorts. The WPA employed millions of struggling Americans seventy years ago when we were at our lowest point, and the government needs to introduce a program like that again that will target the unemployed and provide them with good, productive jobs to work on roads, schools, hospitals, and countless other things. You’ll see benefits that will last for many years to come from steady employment and a stronger infrastructure.

In addition to a comprehensive jobs program, we need a comprehensive trade policy that will not neglect our workers and our important industries, like steel and automobiles. As I’ve said countless times before, it’s time that we get rid of the status quo and withdraw from NAFTA, CAFTA, the WTO, and these other agreements and organizations that put foreign countries ahead of our own. We must approach trade in the best interest of American workers, as well as our environment and recognizing basic human rights. When cheap goods are imported here from China, of course you’ll see these factories shut their doors. Tariffs can be a force of good and I will seek to implement them to strengthen American commerce as President. Some may criticize my policies, but I ask everyone in the audience: can we do better? Many will say that they haven’t felt the prosperity of the ‘90s boom, and I can say a lot more about President Bush tonight, but I won’t go there. If you want a truly robust economy, though, my plans for America will bring out the best economy that you’ll have seen in decades. Workers come first in a Kucinich administration.

I have never supported the PATRIOT Act and I never will. The reason is simple: it’s a thoroughly unconstitutional mess that has invaded Americans’ privacy without proper justification. Washington felt like making changes to our national security after 9/11, but our politicians went too far with this, and it’s unfortunate that it received wide support from both parties. I’m also disappointed that there are some on this stage tonight who still see good in it. As President, it will be a high priority of mine to fully repeal the PATRIOT Act and other similar unconstitutional measures. Let’s not forget that the Fourth Amendment is still in our Bill of Rights, but it seems that we’ve neglected our Bill of Rights more and more as time has passed. The New York Times published a story a few months back that showed how the Bush administration has used the act to snoop on activities not related to terrorism, despite what the legislation is about, and people have even been prosecuted this way. I wish we could say that we still have rule of law, but sometimes it doesn’t feel like we do. We can tackle crime and terrorism without infringing on the privacy rights of all Americans. The liberty of our people must not be tarnished, even with well intentions. That’s why we must wage this fight.

A good starting point for a minimum wage under my vision would be at ten dollars an hour. Ideally I would like it to be raised more, although this would be a great place to start that I think is achievable in the near future. I’m actually glad that some of my fellow Democrats, like Senator Biden, have voiced support for my plans here, because we should all recognize that our workers are grossly underpaid in a lot of cases, and the government isn’t doing what it can right now to help. You see companies like Wal-Mart that have made wage slaves out of its workers, who end up relying on government welfare in many instances because they can’t support themselves and their family on the money that they’re already making, and with a business as expansive and profitable as Wal-Mart, that’s not something we should just tolerate. The cost of living has only risen with the years, as has inflation, so the current minimum wage we have nationally does not reflect what people need just to live reasonable lives. A livable wage is one of the most important things we can achieve in this economy. Raising the minimum wage would bring immediate relief to millions of Americans, so that’s why it’s so crucial to raise it to ten dollars now.

South Carolina, it’s nearly the end of the year. Soon we will hit the clock on 2004 and start anew. We’ll face some very important decisions next year. This election is beginning to be on everyone’s mind now as we’re approaching the first primaries, and it’s a total scramble. What I can tell all of you out here is to get organized. We’re down to four Democrats now and we’re doing better in the polls than ever before. But the work isn’t done yet, because now our first tests are coming in Iowa, New Hampshire, and this state. We have the ability to win, and I think the polls are underestimating our strength, because we have the strongest grassroots organization by far. Now is our time to shine!

Meeting ordinary citizens here in New Hampshire is a refreshing break from the politics of Washington, let me tell you. You see so much dysfunction down in Capitol Hill, and there’s sort of a callous attitude that prevails, where ordinary Americans aren’t really given the respect that they deserve. I’d like to change that as President. My roots are definitely working class, so I know what it’s like for many Americans out there who have just barely gone by. My father was a truck driver and my mother stayed at home, and we moved more than twenty times during my childhood. The poor and middle class in America haven’t gotten the proper care that they need in this economy, especially now that it’s beginning to slow down. It doesn’t have to be that way, though. I’ve been working on behalf of the working class my whole time in public service. Your taxes deserve to be cut, your entitlements deserve to be protected, and your jobs deserve to be secure!

January 4
-Meet and Greet in Sutton, NH

TV Ad: Different

Hillary Clinton recently said the following during a presidential debate: "I don't really see any major differences between myself and any of my fellow Democrats in this field, with the exception of Rep. Kucinich." She's right. Time and time again, Dennis Kucinich has stood out from the pack as the only candidate with new, bold ideas for our country. A foreign policy of peace and a domestic policy of security is what he has always stood for. Other polticians have followed the herd, but not him. While you'll get the same old, same old with the other candidates, make no mistake: Dennis Kucinich is different. I'm Dennis Kucinich, and I approve this message.

George Allen Campaign Schedule - December 28th, 2003 - January 10th, 2004

"Some might tell me, well, George, Delaware isn't a swing state. Delaware is a deep red Democratic state. And what I say to them is that that is deeply untrue. Governor Pierre DuPont is from Delaware, elected by large margins, and endorsed strong tax reform and social security changes to make it solvent for the future. Pierre DuPont is someone who never compromised on his values. Neither do I. People in the state of Delaware are no different from people anywhere else: they want a leader with strong convictions. I have never backed away from any view I have had. People expected me to back away from Medicare Part D, but I won't, because that is a healthcare accomplishment of the President, and I back it 100%. Delaware Governors like DuPont, Castle, and Senators like Roth are the type of people that get things done, and I am very much of their brand of conservatism."

December 28th-30th [Delaware]:
Barnstorming throughout the state of Delaware
Building Campaign offices in New Castle County, Delaware
Speech at the Republican Party of Delaware
Meeting with Pierre DuPont and Michael Castle (seeking endorsements)
Town Halls in New Castle County, Delaware
Meet and Greets elsewhere in the State

"Our chances in New Hampshire are looking stronger every day. We recently received the endorsement of the New Hampshire Union Leader, after Pat Buchanan left the campaign to endorse our ticket. Things are looking better for this campaign every day Bill, and I have a feeling we are going to win, not just in Iowa, not just the nomination, but the whole thing!"

December 31st - January 4th [South Carolina]:
Media Appearances
Fundraisers along the shore of South Carolina
Bus tour across the state
Barnstorming in Columbia, South Carolina
Town Halls across the State
Meeting with Congressman Jim DeMint (Seeking Endorsement)

Radio Ad in South Carolina - Ideas

"My opponents talk big about having an honest debate over the issues, but they never get to it. Only our campaign has put together plans that will put America forward. Only our campaign has put forward a plan for a flat tax, that will create thousands of jobs and cut billions in taxes. Only our campaign has put together a plan that will solve the social security crisis of tomorrow, by making sacrifices today. Only our campaign has the willingness to say that if we don't do something about wasteful spending, our country will be in a fiscal crisis. We will fix America, with your support.

I'm George Allen, and I approve this message, because this campaign is the campaign of ideas."

January 5th-10th [Iowa]:
Town Halls throughout the state of Iowa
Visit every county on the Northern side of Iowa
Meeting with the Iowans for Life
Meeting with top Iowa staffers to discuss strategy
Rallies in Sioux City, Cherokee, Fort Dodge, Iowa Falls, and Waterloo
Speech in Cedar Rapids, Iowa

"I have seen what has happened in this state happen in many before: manufacturing jobs are leaving this country. It's a shame, and the problem is a lack of innovation. Other countries, like China, are lowering wages beyond what is allowable here, and taking all of the jobs. We have to combat that somehow, that's why my plan incentives Businesses to stay here, by cutting everyones taxes, allowing more money for people here, and more money for businesses to hire people. It's simple supply side, and it will work!"

New Surrogates:

"My endorsement goes to George Allen. He has the most fiscally responsible plan of any of the candidates out there, and is one of the few willing to truly tackle illegal immigration and social security. He's only way our future looks anything but bleak."

Gary Johnson Surrogate Schedule and Debate Answers:

"The problem is TAXES, and government over regulating the manufacturing industry. We need to lower corporate taxes, our whole tax code is broken! We need better incentives to start a business, otherwise we are only going to see our jobs going overseas. We need an administration that will cut down the unneeded red tape that plagues businesses. A flat tax, a lower corporate tax, and less regulation will bring jobs."

"Do I support the Patriot Act? Absolutely not, it goes against the fourth amendment, and intrudes on the rights of Americans. If anyone else but the government was wiretapping, they'd be thrown in prison! The government should not be above the law! I care about the rights and liberties of Americans, and this does more harm to our security in the long run, as Ben Franklin said, 'He who gives up a little freedom for a little security, loses both and deserves neither.'"

"Well, I have multiple goals and plans that are available to read on my website, but for starters, eliminating the federal income tax and replacing it with a sales tax. This frees a lot of people up, especially their wallets! But my other platforms include eliminating the costly War on Drugs, which has failed in its goals! We've only seen drug use increase, especially among kids, and prison population rise. We need instead to regulate and heavily tax drugs like marijuana, increasing income as well as deterring use. I am also a big advocate for school choice and improving our education system. We need to repeal No Child Left Behind, and make school curriculum and regulations up to the local and state level. We don't need a massive federal beaucracy in charge of education.

Rumsfeld Debate Answers:

Quote
You must be logged in to read this quote.

"As a candidate who has spent a lot of time in New Hampshire talking to people to get to know their actual problems, I can't stress enough how worrying it is to me to see those levels of unemployment. In the 1960's and 1970's I fought against poverty while serving in the Nixon administration, and that work taught me a key lesson: Entrepreneurs and business owners can improve the lives of their fellow citizens who become their employees, their investors, and their customers. But we are holding them back with needless regulation, red tape and an increasing tendency to sacrifice jobs for political dogma. I won't go to those people and say their jobs won't return just for sake of beaurocratic unefficiency, I'll get on that and make sure the government is actually helping them by creating a positive environment for economic growth."

Quote

"America has suffered. That much is beyond dispute. We live in a free nation, and our comittment to freedom is so big that losing any degree of freedom is something we strongly dislike. But these are dangerous times, and our government needs to be able to place some restriction in order to act more efficiently and save American lives. I believe that at some point, we will win this war and will be able to return to something similar to the pre 9/11 America, but right now it would be ridiculous to jeopardize the work of our government by repealing this law. I believe it goes far enough for now, and trust me, as a Former Secretary of Defense I can tell you that it works and that it has already saved American lives."

Quote
You must be logged in to read this quote.

"I believe we can all agree tonight that a free market, a truly free market is something vital, something that America needs in order to suceed. You will have quite a good amount of negativity from the usual suspects, but it is important to appreciate that self-interest is not the same as selfishness. The desire to do well, and to gain wealth for yourself is human nature. The quest for profit has contributed to some of civilization’s most significant innovations that improve, extend, and save lives. Because they have an interest in long-term wealth creation to benefit themselves, their children, and their grandchildren, citizens in a free-market system have a stake in their country’s success as well. And in regards to that, the best way to ensure long term wealth creation is to continue with the path created with the Bush tax cuts, while at the same time spending at a reasonable rate that will allow us to control the deficit. I am not of the opinion that our economy needs massive reform, what it needs is efficient administration and a good degree of responsibility."

Gary Johnson worked his way through college, and became one of the largest business owners in New Mexico, with a standard of ethical behavior. As governor, he was something most politicians aren't, HONEST. He was elected twice in a state that votes 2-1 democratic. As governor he vetoed 750 bills, and cut taxes 14 times. Reduced the size of government through better management, not layoffs. He left office with a $1 billion dollar surplus. This is the man we need for president, a man with proven results.

Rumsfeldmania! - Stage Seven:

"I enjoy beating the low expectations that some have had about me in the past, and I'm really looking forward to do so again. They said I could not be a good Congressman, they were wrong. They said I could bring back life into the company I was a CEO of, and they were wrong. They said the army couldn't be reformed, and once again they were wrong. And now they think I can't win, they think that the Democratic Party will take the White House and somehow solve all the evils in the world. But no, ladies and gentlemen. I plan to give my best effort to win this race and then prove to our opponents, once and for all, that they lack the answers, the means, and the true will to win this election and push their agenda forward. 2004 will be the year of the Republican Party, and you can quote me on that!"

Our policy towards the Middle East can't be one-note. It has to be flexible, able be harder on people at times, like the Iranians who have working to build a nuclear weapon since the 1980's and yet be able to develop a softer line towards countries and people who are making genuine efforts to bring peace to the region, like Eygpt's Hosni Mubarak, Abdullah the II of Jordan, and Ariel Sharon of Israel, who have done what the Palestinians are unwilling to do do and bridged the sizable gap that was between them to create peace accords.

Kucinich Endorsements

Mike Gravel: I remember as a younger man, I went against Nixon in the Senate to read the entire Pentagon Papers from start to finish to put on the record. Vietnam was the battle young people faced back then, and now we have Iraq. Congressman Kucinich has had a stellar record of opposing all of these disastrous wars, and I can't think of any better person to endorse for President.

AFL-CIO: After careful consideration, we are ready to announce that Congressman Dennis Kucinich has this organization's endorsement. Congressman Kucinich has had the strongest pro-labor record based on his many years in public service, and he will be a tireless advocate for workers and unions in the White House. The AFL-CIO will devote whatever resources are necessary to ensure that he wins his party's nomination and he wins the general election.

Breaking: Edwards Hospitalized

Senator John Edwards, until now a strong insurgent candidate threatening to become the Democratic frontrunner for the nomination, has been taken to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. On the eve of a crucial debate in New Hampshire, Edwards had finished an appearance in Iowa City (where he appeared normal, if a bit pale) and was heading to the Des Moines airport when he complained of chest pain, dizziness, and shortness of breath. Cardiologists at the hospital refused requests for interviews, but the campaign released a statement claiming that it involved a non-life-threatening heart condition, but one that requires treatment by cardiologists and means he should avoid travel. The Senator will undergo treatment immediately. The telegenic candidate is expected to return to the trail within a few weeks, though whether he'll still have a shot at the nomination remains to be seen. A campaign spokesperson confirmed that the candidate intended to return to the trail once his medical issue was resolved.

OOC: I'll be out of town until next week.
