Gary Johnson Closing Statements:

First I would like to thank all the candidates for coming out tonight, as well as thank our moderator this evening for a well structured debate. (Looks at camera) And thank you who came out tonight, and those of you at home who watched on TV.

You have heard all of our beliefs, our arguments, our convictions, our experiences and most importantly our plans on what must be done for this country. We are at a crossroads, a turning point in American history. We can continue down the road of a two-party system, the same ideas, the same partisan bickering and go on with the status quo. Or, we can break from that mold that we have been stuck in for so long. President Washington warned against parties, as they would just bring this country down, and here we are! We've had two-party rule for too long! We need reform, and the two standard parties are not cutting it.

We need electoral reform, but why would the two major parties support it? They way the system works it keeps them in office! We need to heed Eisenhower's message about the Military-Industrial Complex, yet the two major parties continue to prop it up, for they have all the more incentive to keep it going, because it means more money in their pockets, and they can stay in office all that more longer. What we need is a change of course, and that is why I am here today, to offer that change, and with you the American People, we can do it! We can LIVE FREE!

TV and Radio Ad to be played in following states:

Only one candidate has a plan for healthcare that will not bankrupt the nation. That will give you a choice in your healthcare plans. No more monopolies, big pharma, instead a people's healthcare. Governor Johnson's plan is to reduce the regulation on buying healthcare, allow you to buy healthcare across state lines, and encourage true competition in the healthcare industry. Who do you trust when it comes to healthcare? The government *show picture of run down VA hospitals and seniors looking through medicare and medicaid pamphlets* or charities and free market solutions? *show well kept private hospitals, and charity hospitals* Vote for a choice in healthcare, vote Gary Johnson this November.

"Oh, Brooklyn. I love you. And Joe Biden loves you! So vote in November, and vote for Joe! When I ran for President in 1972, I faced long odds and knew I had to work hard. So did Joe. But he fought hard in that primary, and showed us what he's made of. As President we know he will do us proud."

Final Presidential Debate: Closing Statement

You know, you may have heard the ad earlier this year, but when I was a kid I had this stutter. It was pretty tough, but I sat down in front of the mirror and read poetry, the bible...even the Hardy Boys, and I was able to overcome. I'm just an Irish Catholic kid from Scranton. Now, I've never been a 'simple law clerk,' but I've been a grocery store clerk. I've long said, this campaign is for the people. A campaign centered on the promise that my administration will never give up the fight for the everyman; the promise to never shut out their voice in the nation's capital.

When I began this race, the Intrade betting network gave me the chance of winning at 900 to 1. Today it's five. That's because more and more people are realizing that I have a proud record of representing the people of Delaware. As President I will represent the people of America, with the promise to make us respected abroad and safe at home.

In this campaign I was the first and for weeks the only one to even acknowledge the need to raise the minimum wage. Tonight, every single one of my opponents brought it up, or had surrogates on the news shows addressing the topic. But here's the difference: I will follow through. I will follow through and I will follow through by committing to the sensible plan I have laid out in Iraq. While President Bush has charged the war to the country's charge card, I will level with you and release a timetable upon taking office, by doing so promising to slow our growing budget deficit, and fix the mistakes made by Bush in Iraq.

You know that old saying: "If You Want To Go Far, Go Together". Well, together we can raise the minimum wage, and raise millions out of poverty. Together we can ensure the affordability of a higher education for every young adult. Together, America, we will go far. Thank you for tuning in, and God bless you and your families. Good night.

"There are only a few weeks left in this election, but polls are showing that we may win Vermont! This would send a message to the quasi-two party system that there is a viable option for social justice and equality. For all of this talk about wasted votes, the only one I can think of is a vote for gutting our welfare programs and continuing overseas engagements."

Round XXXI: October 16-23 2004

The final stretch! Only 18 days until the 2004 Presidential Election and the second and final Presidential Debate showed that the four candidates are taking nothing for granted and that it will be a sprint from now until November 2nd!

The debate format, being a town hall style allowed all the candidates to shine in their own unique ways. Congressman Kucinich distinguished himself, when asked what was the biggest challenge facing America outside of terrorism, and he said the environment, and was the only candidate to touch on the issue. It was seen as a strong point for the Ohio Congressman.

A question posed to all the candidates was, to name one thing the liked about each other and one thing they disliked about each other. All candidates spoke highly of each other, but it was Vice President Giuliani that seemed to steal the show with his answer: “I don’t mean any disrespect here but Charlie - this is a silly question. All of the men on this stage have their good qualities and their more negative ones. My opinion on them isn’t what’s important. We’ve all worked quite hard to get where we are tonight, and we all deserve recognition for this. But my campaign is based on policy and ideas. I’m not going to sit here and point out what I like and dislike about the other candidates. Let’s talk about healthcare, Iraq, the economy, or the serious issues of the campaign. This kind of question belongs at a college orientation, not on the stage of a presidential debate.

Giuliani received a round of applause from the audience and most pundits considered it the strongest part of his performance, along with answer regarding the Iraq War.

Governor Johnson also delivered a strong performance, starting the night off with a question from the audience, if you are elected President you will be the first candidate since George Washington to not be either a Democrat or Republican, how will you be able to make Washington work since you have no connection to either party?” “First off Washington isn't working to begin with, so I'd actually be getting it working again. For one I would mold myself after Washington, picking the best candidates for each cabinet position, not needing to tow a party line. I would also would be more free to work with both sides of the aisle to get legislation that would benefit all of the country, rather than just one party.

Both Democrats and Republicans have good ideas, and with the hopeful addition of some independents this year, a good leader can work with both sides to get things accomplished, no matter the party that holds a majority. Governor Ventura and I both know how to work with a divided congress, we have dealt with it in our own states and we can deal with it at a national level. You can be assured that when you vote for us this November, you will have proven leadership in the White House.”
Like Giuliani, Johnson received a great round of applause from the audience, so loud that Moderator Charlie Gibson head to turn around and quiet the audience down.

All pundits declared the debate a big win for Johnson and his campaign heading into the final days of the campaign. “Gary Johnson is a formidable contender and that’s what he is a contender. He is not only appealing to disaffected Republicans and liberty minded conservatives, but he is also appealing to Democrats. Of the two candidates, meaning him and Dennis Kucinich, Johnson I think has the strongest appeal and heading into the last eighteen days or whatever it is, I’d be very happy if I were Gary Johnson.” – Joe Scarborough

Lastly, Joe Biden, proved once again what a terrific debater he is, after last tonight’s performance. Biden, who’s focus has been to keep this a race between himself and Vice President Giuliani. The Delaware Senator delivered a fine response regarding taxes and whether current rates would expire or continue, “No. I've supported the current tax cuts as they stand for those in the middle and working class, where they do the most good for an economy that we all can benefit and prosper from. Letting the cuts expire for the truly wealthy will be the focus. In the first debate, I mentioned a threshold of $400,000 a year. My administration will propose this to Congress and let them do what they do best: represent hardworking Americans. Having a proven record of leadership and deal-making in the Senate, I am fully confident my administration will find common ground with Congress, to ensure that we do not contribute to Bush's budget deficit, and that hardworking Americans like you are not put on the charge card.

(stepping forward)

All of you, I want you to know that I feel your pain. I was the first person in this campaign to talk about raising the minimum wage. I entered that bill into the U.S. Senate and as President I will sign it. I know what it takes to keep our economy strong and keep the creation of good-paying jobs here at home, not overseas. You know, sometimes, the pundits that slice and dice American politics call these issues "pocketbook issues." But that's too small. These are important issues, that effect every one of us here in America and if the wrong person is elected President that opportunity will slip away from the people who need it most. My policies and the principles I stand for as President will call for an economic patriotism rooted in the belief that growing our economy begins with a strong and thriving middle class."

Pundits largely declared, much like the first debate it to be a dead heat between all four candidates, though many agreed Johnson seemed to benefit the most in terms of raising his profile, which will likely translate into a bump in the polls.

Who Won The Final Presidential Debate?(R) Rudy Giuliani: 20%
(D) Joe Biden: 20%
(L) Gary Johnson: 19%
(G) Dennis Kucinich: 14%
Four Way Tie: 16%
Undecided: 11%

Gallup Tracking Poll: (R) Rudy Giuliani: 34%
(D) Joe Biden: 33%
(L) Gary Johnson: 17%
(G) Dennis Kucinich: 10%
Undecided: 6%

Talking Points:

George Will: "Giuliani demonstrated tonight that he is ready to be President. He commands authority and respect, and certainly, not that it is the entire purpose, but he is very presidential, but also, more importantly he is right on the policies."

Donna Brazile: "I like Congressman Kucinich, he certainly made excellent points this evening, but Joe Biden is a dedicated public servant and of all the candidates in the race he has the best chance of helping and fixing the problems facing the middle class, which have largely been ignored by President Bush, Former Vice President Cheney and now Vice President Giuliani."

George Stephenopolous: "Dennis Kucinich and Gary Johnson executed the same strategy from their first debate which was to do no harm. They didn't make any gaffes, they didn't contradict themselves. They laid out their visions for America and simply made the case, 'we're different than the other two guys on this stage, because we're neither Democrat or Republican' and I think that has some appeal in this day in age. We are a divided country, so it is hard to see how one breaks through, but tonight at least showed, especially looking at the performance by Governor Johnson that America is at least looking at him and giving him consideration."

Breakdown of the Final Rounds:
October 16-23
October 23-30
October 31-Nov. 2

This Round will close on August 7th at 11;59 PM EST
