One community also threatened a couple they would be evicted if they flew the American Flag in front of their house. They were going to be kicked out for violating the Scam Association Home Owners Association Hitleresque  rules of conduct for a homeowner.

I don't think any government has a right to restrict any non-profane form of expression.  If I want to fly an upside-down flag with "USA SUCKS" stitched into it, that should be my right.

But "bigotry"Huh  Please.  Go back several decades to when country clubs posted signs that read "No dogs or jews allowed."  *That's* bigotry.  Bigotry is when you deny someone something everyone else is entitled to.  In the case of this town, the same rules apply to everyone.  It's not bigotry, it's just a stupid rule.

"Americans are fiercely loyal but until they get on our goat they don't know how fiercely loyal we are as Australians to our country."

How loyal can she be to her country if she lives in the United States? If it means so much to her that she would go through all this trouble, why isn't she in Australia? The home owners association has that rule so that people don't fly Nazi flags, and sh*t like that. I love Oz, but this lady just needs to shut up. I'm for free speech and all that, but this is not a big deal.

it may not be the government, but it is a bad idea as it sets a bad precedent.  one thing that is great about this country is its love of freedom.

if we start with the anti-flag burning, etc, we become as paranoid as the netherlanders, who have outlawed owning copies of mein kampf, or as judgemental as the germans, who have outlawed nazi symbols, or as bigoted as the folks who demand the good people of south carolina remove the battle flag of the confederacy from the statehouse dome.  If you want to have a big swastika on your front door, I hope I have the courage to help you defend your right to do so.  In my country, you have the constitutional right to fly whatever flag you like.  these kinds of things are what make me so damn scared of the new authoritarian left.  we should be ever vigilant of such rules.  always question authority!  always.

I agree with the view expressed by many posters.  The first amendment gives freedom of speech to everyone.  That means people relatively in the mainstream views have frredom of speech, but also racists, nazis, and terrorists have freedom of speech.  These local governments are trying to say that you can only have frredom of speech if you say nice things, but this is what is a problem in so many other countries.

I didn't mean it like that. I meant it in a good natured joking kind of way. I just think she is a bored old woman with nothing better to do than cause a fuss.

well, technically you could say that about anyone. after all, all we need to live is food, clothing, shelter, and reproduction. everything else is making a fuss Smiley

I think the notion that allowing everyone to do the same thing, but excluding them from other things, despite them wanting different things isn't discrminiation is wrong. That's like saying that giving everyone the same right to vote for the Communist party is not discriminating against non-Communists.

Yeah.  Sorry, I seem to have become one of those critical returned-expats.  But then again there are still a few other neighborhoods in America besides suburbs.

seems tense in this room.  for a friday.  not contradiction, big tent.  room for dissenting opinions.  you really don't get that about the GOP, and how that distinguishes it from the DNC, I suppose.
