Republicans should probably stay away from attacking Obamacare this November. I'm sure they still will though.

You might change the thread title number from 7 to 9 million:

Survey: Net gain of 9.3M insured under O-Care

By Jonathan Easley
April 08, 2014, 04:17 pm

Approximately 9.3 million people have gained health insurance since ObamaCare went live in October, a new study finds.

The Rand Corp. analysis, which only polled people through mid-March, before the late surge of ObamaCare sign-ups, found that the uninsured rate has fallen from 20.5 percent to 15.8 percent in that time.

This is in line with a Gallup survey released last week that showed the uninsured rate falling to 15.6 percent, the lowest it’s been since 2008.

Rand said that 14.5 million in total have gained new coverage since the launch, but 5.2 million of those were due to cancelled policies that had to be replaced, leaving 9.3 million newly insured.

According to the study, 1.4 million of the 3.9 million who had signed-up for ObamaCare through mid-March were previously uninsured. The Obama administration said nearly 5 million had signed-up for coverage at that juncture, but Rand acknowledged its figures didn’t “fully capture the surge in enrollment.”

This is a BIG DEAL assuming it stands up to scrutiny.  Those are the kind of numbers that could turn Obamacare into a net positive for Democrats this fall.

Yeah, Jimmy Fallon's turned pretty right-wing now that he's replaced Leno.

i seem to recall a lot of right-wingers claiming that young people weren't going to sign up because the fine was cheaper.

*yawn* bullsh*t right-wing spin... who cares? Obamacare is doing what it was designed to do. And what it was designed to do is exactly what America needs.

If you want to deal with facts (well, good guesses thereof), you need only look here: http://www.rand.org/content/dam/rand/pubs/research_reports/RR600/RR656/RAND_RR656.pdf

Antonio, do you know authoritarian this sounds? "Exactly what America needs"... I mean, really?

The deadline hasn't been extended for months? It hasn't been extended at all, really. It was always March 31st.

I'm sure the millions of Americans who have access to stable, affordable health insurance for the first time feel very oppressed by Obama's authoritarianism. Roll Eyes

Yeah, the deadline for coverage beginning Jan 1 was extended by 8 days due to the website problems. March 31 was always the 3Q coverage deadline, as it always has been for insurance companies.

Generally speaking, if your beliefs on a subject can be summarized in a two picture comic with 24pt font captions, it's not well thought out.

The early figures don't seem to be lining up with the projections, no.

The "other" category in the RAND report should be considered people who would otherwise be uninsured.  To move out of that category, is to move into a prime uninsured pool.  It means you've ended your service to the US Military or are a dependent who turned 27 years old.  These are life events which happen yearly regardless of the law's existence.

As noted in the graph he posted: 1.5 mil of the "others" moved into no insurance, 1.2 mil others bought on the marketplace. So, it's actually more like 2.6/3.9 not 1.4/3.9, when you consider that the others did not lose their coverage because of the law and would be uninsured today without the law.

But again, it's just another Op/Ed writer twisting in the wind, making bold statements in his headline and then weaseling around things he doesn't understand and hedging his bets with hearsay.

The 1.4/3.9 data is completely ignoring the massive surge in the latter half of March, which almost certainly leaned heavily to the uninsured side.

Final number will be about 50/50.

Really? How so? I really don't get it. I thought the notion that the goal of a government is to provide for its people's needs would be widely accepted across ideological lines, even though we might disagree on what these needs are.

Nothing sounds more authoritarian than expanding access to health insurance for the lower-to-middle classes, freelancers, and those starting their own business. What ever happened to our freedom in this country to not have health insurance, show up at the ER anyway, and stick everyone else with the bill?

Job lock and lack of access to health insurance has been created by tax-subsidized employer-provided healthcare systems. You see how Americans consume oil, food, and retail goods? That's how we consume healthcare, too. Now imagine the government subsidizes consumption by excluding it from gross income, and they hide the cost of healthcare by dumping it on your employer, except for a nominal copay or relatively small deduction.

Obamacare strengthens the disease, to the delight of the virus, while suppressing the symptoms. Who could ever be against such benevolent policy?

It sounds like you're advocating for raising taxes by shifting some income into the taxable bucket.

Now, which political party is more likely to consider legislation that does that, and which party is more likely to demagogue the hell out of anyone who proposes it and nuke the remains?

Eliminating health insurance tax subsidies would be offset by raising the personal exemption or by changing statutory rates. Eliminating counter-productive social engineering is the goal.

Health insurance is basically a microcosm for our economic problems. We've gone beyond the point of sensible policy, and now we are dealing with negative marginal utility. We are spending money to make ourselves worse off, like a sick person overdosing slowly on morphine.

According to the government, 35% of enrollees (now over 8 million) are under the age of 35.
