The spring of talent in Hollywood would appear to have gone dry.  Would you believe a remake of Citizen Kane in 3D?  Here's the story from NPR's All Things Considered earlier today.  And let's face it Keanu Reeves is no Orson Wells.  But then who is these days?  I can think of worse people to attempt a remake of this classic, but having a iPhone slip from the grasp of Kane's dying hand instead of a snowglobe just doesn't work for me.

Why? Easy -- money > art. Hollywood only cares about making products people will loose their freaking minds over.

That's EXACTLY why I did this: https://uselectionatlas.org/FORUM/index.php?topic=181696.0

I had no experience, and only spent around $500.

And to be fair to Hollywood, there are only seven stories in the world.

The fact is, when anything good comes out, there are fifty imitators. That's how it's always been. It would be more accurate if you had just struck the anymore part.

I don't know about 'originality,' but there is no question in my mind that writing has declined immeasurably. Maybe art imitates life after all. Things now are crafted for audiences with specific interests on rigid production schedules, so it has curbed creativity and quality, IMO. I don't see how that's even debatable - you could argue the originality angle if you wanted, but fads have always come and gone, although the sequels started about the 1980s. That all probably ended up boxing in filmmaking, which has always been a business but now seems more a business than anything else.

I most recently watched The Lion In winter and was actually pleasantly reminded and awed that yes, dialogue like that was once written for the screen!

At home, I mainly watch older movies and the stuff Criterion puts out, if it interests me.

Television's starting to be more attractive for talented writers and actors, so Hollywood actually has to compete for once.

That said, reports of Hollywood's death are greatly exaggerated.

I noticed this trend several years ago. Why take the risk if you don't have to? If two movies have an equal expected return but one is more risky, then a risk averse corporation will choose the other. It's that simple. Spiderman 5 is still Spiderman.

When did Naso take over Ernest's account? I'm pretty sure where Ernest exists, TV would get you burned for witchcraft.

It does, but movies are okay so long as they are silent of course.

I think a lot of the originality and talent has shifted over to television.
