I hope he wins, the Republican House caucus needs someone to entertain now that Michele Bachmann is leaving. Too bad primaries are closed in Wisconsin, Democrats could crossover and vote for Grothman.

Geez, I'd hope Pubs could find a decent conservative challenger instead of a nutbar. We are talking about a "Pub" who advocates single-payer.

That's like one member out of over 230, not really a big deal. The problem Republicans have is that they aren't a big enough tent and don't get that complete ideologically purity is not a must.

Primaries are not closed in Wisconsin last I checked, we have no party registration so you vote in whichever primary you want. Obviously you cant vote in both.

So, if a Democratic Congressman advocated the elimination of all federal health care programs, you wouldn't have a problem with that?

That's an extreme position, single payer is hardly extreme and Petri is mainly a party line voter when it comes to most issues.

Unless Petri's minor Oshkosh scandal blows up into a major one, I have trouble envisioning Grothman posing much of a primary challenge to him. Grothman is a WOW counties guy and WI-6 is a Sheboygan-Fond-du-lac centered district. Unless Grothman can find some appeal to overcome his geographic disadvantage, he'll have a rough time. Also, he doesn't live in the district.

Why can't Ohio ever get any of the fun stuff? Sad

Grothman really has nothing to lose from this run since his State Senate seat isn't up until 2016 and Dems have nothing to do but just sit back and relax. Hopefully, WI Dems can recruit a strong challenger here because if Grothman does win the primary, there are going to be very few women who will vote for someone who thinks money is more important for men while the women choose to stay at home, believes single parents are "child abusers" and Planned Parenthood and abortion activists are racists who promote the genocide of little girls.

Assuming Americans for Prosperity, Right to Life, and other far-right organizations back Grothman, it will be difficult to attack Petri as "not conservative enough" given his strong pro-life record to. Grothman doesn't even reside in WI-6 (makes no sense that he didn't just challenge Sensenbrenner in his home area), but for someone whose been in Congress since Carter, he can make something out of that and hope for the best. We need someone to replace Bachy after all.

I wouldn't be surprised if Americans for Prosperity supported Grothman, but why on earth would Right to Life try to get rid of Petri? That would make no sense.

Anyway, it comes down to local politicans and the demographics of the district, which would not be in Grothman's favor in a primary. Ozaukee County is enough to make the district safe for the GOP barring a scandal even in a Democratic wave. If by some miracle Grothman did win the primary, he'd probably win the general election too.

Congratulations Representative Grothman

Good luck surviving 2016.

WHAT? First of all, Grothman lives far outside the district and will have difficulty competing with the district's own politicians. Secondly, this is a district Obama barely carried in 2008 (when he won the country by 7 percentage points, so R+7), but then it swung at a significantly higher-than-average level to the Republicans in 2012 (Romney won it by 7 points while Obama won the country by 4, so R+11). That's barely gettable in a wave year (and Grothman would be a flawed incumbent should he win), but I don't think Grothman would be likelier to lose reelection than to win. This is a pretty red district.

I agree. Grothman would make the seat vunerable, as he is insane. I know that word gets thrown around a lot when describing the far-right, but Grothman is unlikable, mean, and literally insane. He introduced a bill to ban weekends.

However, this retirement is sure to draw in other Republicans (State Rep. Duey Stroebel is already considering), who are much more likely to win the nomination. This seat is red, and Obama only on it in 2008 because he over performed in Wisconsin.

I'll call this Safe R unless Grothman really builds up steam.

If Grothman is the Republican nominee and the Democrats can get the Manitowoc Mayor or County Executive from Winnebago County, it could be competitive like Lean/Tilt R. If its not Grothman then its a Safe R.

Yankee, you don't seem to have read completely the thread Tongue

In hindsight, it would have been pretty stupid for something like that to break in the early morning hours. Its not like he is in China or something. Tongue I saw the headline and posted it, but in fairness I couldn't even see the thread as it jammed loading since I clicked post before it had finished loading.

Is 53% Romney is Wisconsin really "light red"?
