Seriously. Like I'm not particularly anti-gun. I don't think anti-gun laws are effective generally (at least not the ones passed in the US, the Assault Weapons Ban was completely and utterly worthless in every way) and I don't have a problem with people who own guns for legitimate purposes or even have a concealed carry permit (although the ones who flip out over things like malls still not allowing guns inside and acting like they need it for protection there are pretty insufferable.)

However most gun owners are TERRIBLE. They'd make me happy if all guns somehow ended up banned just for the schaudenfreude. The vast majority of gun owners are utterly deranged paranoid lunatics who are all convinced black helicopters and the evil big gubmint is coming to take away their freedoms and the only reason that hasn't happened yet is all the assault weapons they have in their garage somewhere. Seriously, they're so terrible they make me want to say "yeah go ahead and ban the guns."

I'm not especially fond of gun culture, so this may be one area where we agree.

Basically, yes. In fact, the behavior of most gun rights supporters may have been what kept me in the pro-gun control crowd for so long.

Most people I know who embody "gun culture" don't own guns. In fact, I know a blind kid who talks non stop about gun rights. You can't make this stuff up.

Yeah, same here. I have a lot of pro-gun rights neighbors, and though they're nice people in every other way, their obnoxious love of their guns is so aggravating I've been knee-jerk pro-gun control for a while. Now I'm less so (I'm still pro background checks though), but gun culture is ridiculously annoying.

Also Sanchez, the pro-gun blind kid sounds absolutely hilarious.

He is a fairly big guy, wears iron tipped boots, leather jackets, and always makes sure to tell you about the cigars he smokes instead of smoking weed or ciggarettes. The guns are the least annoying part about him Tongue.

Gun owners are fine. Gun buyers are the worst.

People buy a tactical weapon because they want kill criminals. After a few years they forget why they bought a gun. Worst case scenario, they sell to a gun shop (who then sell it to another fanatic) and use the proceeds to upgrade to the latest military-spec firearm. Slightly less bad scenario, they make an unlicensed sale to reputable family or friends, and they stop owning guns.

The people who are born into hunting/outdoor gun-owning families are not much of a problem in my experience.

Some tend to be obnoxious, though a vast majority I know are fine. But yeah, I don't see why you need a semi automatic rifle with an extended clip for "deer hunting."

I don't take issue with guns per se. I've never been around them or used one and I've always been kind of curious. I think it would be fun to try trap shooting or hunt birds or something like that.

But stockpiling military-grade weapons and firing them off indiscriminately at targets in celebration of 'Murica and Muh Freedumz doesn't really appeal to me.

The average gun owner around here is a 17 years old and belongs to the Stack Money Goons or Marcy Ave Bloods rather than the Republican Party.  When you hear about things like people shooting babies execution style in the street to intimidate their parents, you start to dislike gun owners.

So Black Panthers, basically? I have heard that in the 60s they terrorized the inner city to get them to go against the democrats and to act as spoilers for nixon.

There are a lot of those types with nothing to do, unfortunately.

The stereotype exists, but I don't think they are anywhere near as prevalent as some of you seem to think they are.

I own guns but don't really care for the 'culture' associated with it.

I agree with this. Even here in arch-conservative western Nebraska, I don't encounter many stereotypical gun lunatics like the ones described in the OP.

Yeah, I could care less about the guns themselves, but the people who own them make me want to ban them forever.

In archconservative suburban Utah, you'd meet several gun nuts.

Yes.  I'm mostly neutral or ambivalent on gun control, but don't have much respect for those who feel they need guns because "the government is out to get them".

I do. While I generally support gun ownership rights with minor restrictions like background checks and the prevention of gun sales to convicted felons, I find most of the supporters of gun rights to be caricatures of far-right political movements such as the Tea-Party and Militia movement.

He doesn't, and that is not entirely a bad thing.
