People like Grover Norquist and Matt Kibbe have no business criticizing George H. W. Bush. His Election in 1988 is of today the last of the Republican landslide victories. Their Republicanism is one that is incapable of winning elections (and incapable of governing), which alienates large sections of the people.

George H.W. Bush is a decent man, who did a good job as President. When it comes to foreign policy, he is probably one of the best American Presidents of the last 40 years. I don’t know enough about his record on domestic policy. It is however clear that his administration was competent. The people who aspire to the Republican nomination in 2016 have a lot to learn from his administration in that respect.

It was probably inevitable that George H. W. Bush would be seen as a failure. The same way that Carter is viewed as an incompetent tax-and-spend liberal. I think that view is flawed. Both men were fundamentally competent, but were dragged down by a bad economy, their own parties and lost to political operators like Ronald Reagan and Bill Clinton.
