No. I find it especially intriguing that "small government" republicans love this policy.

Small government isn't the overarching ideology, it's punishing poor people. Whether government needs to be big or small to acheive maximum punishment varies case by case.

No. For all intents and purposes, it spits in the face of the Fourth Amendment.

Aside from moral and constitutional concerns, it also costs more than the money saved, thus making it completely pointless.

No . . . but, to have drug testing required for so many jobs while not required for welfare does not seem to me to be a healthy situation in terms of encouraging work.

This, but other than encouraging business's to drug test less, I can't see a good way out of it.

In terms of the political process, some states have enacted restrictions on the practice, and public employment can set an example - sometimes they are the worst.

I understand the reasoning behind, but ultimately it's too costly and invasive to be worth it.

We'd be far better off as a society if we put money into drug rehabilitation programs instead of the proven money waster that is mass drug testing.

I used to think it was a good idea but I agree with everyone else, it is unnecessarily invasive and adding insult to injury.

I think it is a good idea if the welfare recipient has a criminal history. Otherwise, I agree that it is invasive and insulting.

The solution to this is obviously to ban drug testing in private employment unless you're going to be operating heavy machinery or flying planes or something.

It's been conclusively demonstrated that such policies cost more than they save, regardless of any moral issues. In fact, I think that this fact as been so well-publicized that it's impossible to even discuss the issue without the fact coming up.

I was completely stunned when Mississippi decided to enact this ... a few weeks ago (!?)

No.

If you can't spend your welfare check on booze, heroin, coke, and pot, then what's the point?  Might as well sober up and get a job.

Drug testing should only be allowed in jobs where:

1-An inebriated employee could actually pose a safety risk and
2-Limited only to drugs that can have long term effects, aka not marijuana.

Aside from 4th and 5th amendment considerations, drugs ought to be legal anyway.

And if the prospect of giving drug users welfare checks freaks you out, you can soothe your sensitive nerves by remembering we spend more on corporate welfare than social welfare.

There are three things that I'm bothered about:

1.) Most people on food stamps do work. The whole point of mandatory drug testing is to paint a false picture of welfare recipients as lazy bums who refuse to work.

2.) Why only drugs? Why not testing them for alcohol or nicotine abuse? Or for eating fast food or watching reality TV?

3.) It's way too expensive. In Utah f.i., there were only 12 confirmed drug users (out of 4,730 applicants).

No, this concept is just a way to punish and to boss around the poor.
