Well, yes, there are only a handful of states that are even politically throughout them. Actually, on second thought, there are pretty much only three: Oklahoma (varying degrees of populist-conservative), Massachusetts (varying degrees of slight libertarian liberalism), and Rhode Island (varying degrees of liberalism). This would just be a statewide average, I suppose. But, indeed, this is largely irrelevant as it does not reflect any area within the state, necessarily.

Vermont is more socially liberal than California.

I'd agree with most of this except I'd put Louisiana more socially conservative and New Hampshire more economically conservative.
