With the assassination of President-Elect Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1933, John Nance Garner's conservative, largely laissez-faire policy proved unable to deal with the mass unemployment caused by the Great Depression. As a result Louisiana Governor Huey P. Long launched a third party campaign under the Union Party banner advocating a populist economic policy under his famous slogan, "Share the Wealth". With unemployment steady at around 30%, Long and his running-mate Fiorello LaGuardia of New York easily won the election of 1936, defeating both Garner and Alf Landon, the Republican nominee. Long quickly adopted a radical programme including massive public works spending, a minimum wage, various social insurance programs, and new regulations on business. This radicalism frightened the business class who with certain military officers (led by General Douglas MacArthur) plotted a coup. This putsch was successfully executed in 1938, when federal troops under MacArthur's command marched on Washington DC and put Congress under "protective custody". Long committed suicide while LaGuardia was to be exiled to the naval prison at Guantanamo Bay for the rest of his life. There was of course, some armed resistance concentrated in New York City, the Upper Great Lakes, and Long's native Louisiana, but these were quickly and savagely suppressed by the army.

The MacArthur junta soon stepped down in favour of a civilian government which held elections in 1940. However, in reality, the "Second Republic" as the regime was to be called was a one-party state dominated by the National Republican Party (composed of the conservative elements of the Republican and Democratic parties) with the military and J. Edgar Hoover's FBI used to suppress opponents of the government. Labour unions were banned, tariffs were raised, and social welfare was nonexistant under NRP rule. In addition, the NRP regime took a neutral stance in the Second World War due to many in the regime being sympathetic to the Third Reich as implacable enemies of Bolshevism. The war was to end with Germany's triumph in Continental Europe as Britain became isolated and crippled (especially after Japan entered the war in 1942 on the German side attacking British colonies in the Far East although ignoring the Philippines) while the Soviets were driven behind the Urals. The only regret for the Germans was that the Fuhrer never lived to see the final victory due to his mysterious death in a plane crash in 1943. He was succeeded by a Goering-Heydrich government who subsequently executed several officials (most notably Himmler and Goebbels) it accused of having assassinated Hitler.

The various NRP Presidents (who scrupulously served two terms each) were on the whole conservative, pro-business New England or Midwestern Republicans. Their one concession to liberalism was in the area of civil rights as desegregation of public facilities was ordered by the federal government under President Prescott Bush in 1955, partially in order to make blacks a loyal element of the New Order. As it became evident that the Japanese desired the Philippines to complete their dominance of the Orient and the Germans were meddling themselves in South America, a military buildup began which managed to finally completely end the Great Depression almost twenty years after the Crash of 1929. They were, however, at odds with Britain due to the latter electing a radical Labour government under Clement Attlee (1946-1955) and Eric Blair (1955-1967, 1970-1973). Meanwhile various underground movements existed despite the FBI's best efforts to break them up. The two largest was a Socialist movement (with the USSR crushed the Communists were largely absorbed into the Socialist movement) active largely in urban industrial areas and mining regions and a "Christian Populist" movement led by the fundamentalist preacher and writer, Bob Heinlein.

Starting in the 1960s, dissension began to grow in earnest in the United States especially as the economy began experiencing another downturn which quickly deterioated to a depression even worse than the Great Depression of the previous generation. Riots and small-scale rebellions began to break out across the country which were suppressed bloodily. After a particularly savage round of violence, President Richard Nixon stepped down in 1975 in favour of the more moderate Nelson Rockefeller. However by 1976 with unemployment close to 40%,  the Second American Revolution began on the bicentennial with several coordinated risings in both major cities and rural areas that seized control of transportation arteries and industrial facilities. Most importantly, the revolutionaries managed to also seize a part of the nuclear arsenal, forcing a stalemate (although an initial round of nuclear exchanges did end up destroying some half-dozen cities and killing 1.5 million people). The US government (once again under Nixon's control) along with the remainder of the nuclear arsenal, the US Navy, and some 2.5 million refugees fled to Cuba (which had been annexed to the US since 1967) where a government in exile was proclaimed at Havana. The newly established interim government was composed of an uneasy alliance of Christian populists, leftists, and reformist liberals who could agree on the need for a new Constitutional Convention and elections.

The current election is trifold: to elect delegates for the Constitutional Convention along with an interim President and Congress. There are several major parties running but the three main ones are the following...

Christian People's Party-Based largely on the sociopolitical thought Dr. Heinlein (or Reverend Bob) who remains the intellectual head of the party, the CPP is an explicitly religious party dedicated to establishing a Christian Republic. As a result the party is both anti-black and anti-Semitic, denouncing both as allies of the Old Regime, although it has toned down its anti-Catholicism in order to win conservative Catholic voters. In addition it is strongly socially conservative advocating reenacting Prohibition, instituting the death penalty for several crimes such as homosexuality, and strict censorship. It is economically populist however and advocates much of President Long's economic policies such as social insurance and public works programs along with nationalizing certain companies (especially banks). Its candidate is Lyndon LaRouche of New York who was a longtime member of the CPP underground movement and helped take control of New York City. The vice-presidential candidate is Rear Admiral James Earl Carter Jr., who led a mutiny of several submarines at Norfolk and is a traditional Southern fundamentalist.

Workers' Front-The Workers' Front is a coalition of various leftist parties including the Socialists and the Communists and unsurprisingly demands a radical programme. It includes confiscatory taxation, nationalization (or conversion to workers' cooperatives) of big businesses, decentralization of government along with radical social policies such as legalization of all drugs, end to censorship, and the abolition of the death penalty. Its candidate is the "American Liebknecht" Ronald Reagan who radicalized after the Business Plot Coup of 1938, and became a secret Socialist Party organizer starting in 1940. Since then he has been jailed and tortured several times, but always returned until he became the dean of American leftism. His running mate is Malcolm Little, with which the Workers' Front hopes to appeal to the black vote.

Liberal Party-The Liberal Party is an uneasy alliance of various moderate opposition figures and reformist National Republican Party members. As a result it has often been open to accusations that is it but a continuation of the Old Regime even though its Presidential candidate, Frank Church was a notable opposition figure. Its programme is similarly moderate, calling mostly for a massive expansion of social welfare programs rather than nationalization and is tolerant in social policy.

Is this going to be a timeline, General Mung Beans? If it is, looking good!

As for who I'd vote, I'd vote for an "Other" party, can't say I really fit in with any of the choices on offer here.

Thanks for the compliment. I originally didn't plan to continue this but if there's enough demand, I may decide to continue this...

He's running for Congress and as a Constitutional Convention delegate under a minor oaleolibertarian party calling themselves the Patriot Party.

The "Christian populist" Robert Heinlein is, if anything, even more crazy than commie Reagan.

What's the current story in Europe? Still under German hegemony with just a rogue Britain?  Was the Holocaust ever uncovered?

Yep, Fuhrer Heydrich remains in firm control of the the Third Reich and New Order Europe. Due to somewhat different history, the Holocaust was both more limited in scale (with many Jews simply being deported to African colonies) and spread out over several years. This has gotten out and has been publicized by the British but public reaction outside of the British Commonwealth has been apathetic (especially in the US thanks to resurgent anti-Semitism).
