People who complain about political correctness are just mad that it's not socially acceptable to be overtly racist/sexist/homophobic anymore.

^Basically.

A lot of what gets labeled as "political correctness" is really just newer politeness rules regarding historically oppressed (and modernly!) groups, and thus a lot of the opposition to political correctness is really just racism/sexism/homophobia/transphobia manifesting itself as outrage over "finicky liberals" or whatever.
