I know this has always been a controversial opinion though widely held. The AV Club considers it as such, gave it a rare A+ in their recap of the series and called it not only the best episode but one of the best 10-15 episodes of TV period. On another forum this topic came up with a bunch of people upset and calling it overrated though.

Personally though...it's always been my favorite. I remember loving it as a teenager and just rewatched it on Netflix...it's actually aged VERY well.

It's a rather odd episode, because aside from a very brief bit near the end, Mulder only appears in flashbacks. Basically the episode is mostly flashbacks with Scully being interviewed by an author (Jose Chung) about a recent case they investigated involving two teens who were potentially abducted by aliens who in turn encountered a third alien. But it appears the "aliens" were in fact just disguised members of a top secret Air Force project. What actually happened and if the third alien even existed is never revealed, just lots of contradictory flashbacks from Scully and other people the author interviewed. Kind of a Rashamon. Also known for its cameos by Jesse Ventura and Alex Trebek.

I don't know if it's the best, but it's definitely one of the best. The X-Files is my all-time favourite show, so it's hard for me to say which episode is best. Besides that, some of my favourites are Squeeze, Ice, Clyde Bruckman's Final Repose, Detour, Bad Blood, and How the Ghosts Stole Christmas.
