I can certainly stomach it. It would be easy to pay for: just tax the rich.

What even are our tax rates? IIRC the top one is 60-70%, but I'm not entirely sure. And I think giving schools Wi-Fi is worth a few tens of billions.

That would involve research, dear Yankee.  Surely we have little time for things such as spending thirty seconds to do a wiki search..

Ugh, I have to go on the wiki...

Are we still going by the 2011 Tax Code Act? And would it be possible to make it so you don't have to scroll down all the way to find the search box?

Nix told us those tax rates had been superseded, and so we repealed it in the Xahar Memorial Repeal. I don't know which law established the new rates though.

edit: okay, looks like they are in the Averroes budget from last year.

If anything we should move to cut the rate back as soon as possible.

According to Yankee we did back in 2013. I'll try and find the new rates on the wiki - Nixy's 2013 budget has them, yes?

This page is your friend: https://uselectionatlas.org/AFEWIKI/index.php/Statute

The Averroes budget retained the 60% rate but raised the threshold to $5 Million.

60% is certainly too low of a top rate. Perhaps we could institute a 75% rate on all income over $1 billion and use the proceeds to fully fund education?

We did have a 90% top rate in the 1950s, after all.

Anyone that knows anything about the history of our tax system knows that that was a very different tax code than we have now. I recommend you study the Kennedy/Johnson tax cuts in the 60s if you don't.

It applied to only a handful of people and had loopholes you could drive an oceanliner through.

I really like the idea and the bill, but I wanted to hop in here and advocate for some language that would put limitations on the above section. Healthcare and mental healthcare should be provided by schools for students to an extent. Leaving this vague, I fear, may lead some to interpret it as full healthcare and mental healthcare services --which schools don't need to do (we have hospitals and doctor's offices, etc, for that). But like I said, some level is definitely necessary.

Without getting too much into the nitty gritty, I advise limitations put on that section. Child care is another example, because we don't need elementary schools with child care (elementary school students don't have children...I hope...teachers do, I would support that).

Suggested Amendment if I may. I realize its not perfect, but I don't want to just jump in here and not be productive. I would be more generous with mental health care IMO.

Just my thoughts. Same ends as the intent of the bill I believe.

EDIT: Did not read all 8 pages of thread, don't yell if this has been mentioned.

Thanks for that, SirNick. I agree with your assessment. Obviously, most if not all are covered for health insurance in Atalsia, but what we meant by this was a school nurse, psychologist, etc. Thanks for picking up on that, without you, we may have passed a bill that may have done terrible things!

We did have a 90% top rate in the 1950s, after all.

So you planning to bomb both Asia and Europe into submission so that everyone has to both borrow and buy from us, just like in the 1950's as well? Tongue

So that 20 years later once they have recovered, we can get creamed by industrial economies that are using more efficient machinary 30 years newer then ours. Why don't you throw in an energy shortage to boot and relive the 1970's in total. Tongue

Economics, Its all about the context.

As someone who wrote a paper on the Kennedy and Johnson tax cuts while studying economics, I'm happy to discuss the differences between our tax code then and now whenever necessary. It's all about context. If our top bracket was 90% now, goodbye economy.

It's a good revision, but I'm not sure what "tourniquet health related needs" means in this context.

A tourniquet is a sort of makeshift bandage, but I can see how the wording might be a bit difficult. Would just day to day needs be ok?

Just use "day to day". I forgot I put tourniquet, I was trying to find a work that meant more or less temporary, and had thought tourniquet could be used that way. Regardless, day to day works just the same.

Fixed:

I would not support a 90% top rate. That's excessive. TNF proposed 75%, though. Anyway, that's a discussion for another bill.

So, provided we actually earmark this WiFi funding, do we also leave the upkeep of these networks to the districts?

Also, some schools need some things more than WiFi, and sometimes block grants of this nature allow schools to be way ahead in some facets, while lagging behind in others, due to incongruity in legislation, lack of funding at the local level, and sheer ignorance of the respective states of individual schools. So perhaps we might want to re-evaluate whether this money might be better spent (I have no real issue with the number, per se).

So, maybe we limit the wifi expansion to public high schools? At least during this initial rollout...

My view is, it is going to need to be done eventually. Schools will not stay wifi less forever, especially given the movement towards tablet computers and away from physical books. But maybe this is too forward thinking, even on my part.

Just because there is wireless access does not mean you have to use wireless access. Averroes, in college I preferred,  in class, my notebook over a laptop but I did appreciate that there was wireless access when i needed it. Perhaps wireless access in elementary schools would benefit faculty and indirectly, students?

Amendment friendly, I still tend to forget that being specific is the best thing when it comes to these bills.
