GM's don't give such cost analysis anymore, we're on our own. Tongue

This article gives a figure of $736K per school for LA (!), but says they don't expect much upkeep costs.

With about a 100.000 public schools in America and even if the expense was much lower, it seems that while we could reduce the upkeep sum, the actual costs are going to be much higher than 5 billion.

Spread it over 5/10 years and partner at least 50% with the Regions on the cost.

5 years
$14,720,000,000 a year.

$ 7,360,000,000 per year from our end.

10 years
$ 7,360,000,000

$3,680,000,000 from our end.

Wouldn't LA be more expensive to outfit than other schools across the country?

And I am fine having regions put up 50% of the cost provided they can afford it. In the end, I just want to get this passed. It appears as if the rest of the plans Scott and I wanted to push through may not see the floor before I leave office. Sad

I have no idea, but I would presume you'd be correct. We really have no way of knowing under our current system of playing this game.

Why?

If we could find out the cost variance and the number that already have it, we would go a long way to reducing that cost nunber to a manageable number.

Doing some quick research, in the US 39% of schools had adequate wifi in late 2013 (source is here- www.theatlantic.com/education/archive/2013/11/more-than-half-of-us-public-schools-dont-have-adequate-wireless-access/281410/ ) so the total cost would be 61% of 73 billion, which is about 45 billion.

I certainly can't.  I don't suspect the taxpayers can either.  Imagine all the other ways that money could be spent - is this really the best use of that?

Is there a way we can keep it to less than that? Does all size fit all? I wanted to keep it to $20 billion max, if that.

Have another beer and get back to me, shua. Tongue

The way I see it is, this investment will have to be made at some point in the future; schools will not be without wifi forever and ever. And I anticipate the cost of such a project will only increase, unless the technology gets substantially cheaper, which I suppose is possible. But it's 2014. Our schools need wifi in the age of cloud computing and the technology we have access to. It would be nice if a company would donate the technology like Apple has offered to do in the US, but that might not be possible in Atlasia.

Can't we just use Yankee's proposal with a framework of three to five years? We don't really need to spend the money right away as long as we don't take too much time, and the cost would be lowered to an acceptable sum for the entire Senate. I would vote for the 45 billion if needed be, but I think the GM should give us his take on this as well.

If the school buildings in LA are larger and/or older than average, I imagine that would likely be the case.

Do we really want to just appropriate $45 billion for this?  Surely we can come up with a program/text to match regional contributions to this purpose?

What even are our tax rates? IIRC the top one is 60-70%, but I'm not entirely sure. And I think giving schools Wi-Fi is worth a few tens of billions.

I can with ease once we now how much we are talking about $45 billion still doesn't accoutn for the cost variance. Some areas will be cheaper others will be more expensive. Once we figure that out, coming up with some kind of matching scheme shouldn't be too hard. Unless it involves a complex formula, then shua is probably better at that than me. Wink

What sort of lifetime does a wifi network have?

^ Also we need to know this as well?

That would involve research, dear Yankee.  Surely we have little time for things such as spending thirty seconds to do a wiki search..

Ugh, I have to go on the wiki...

Are we still going by the 2011 Tax Code Act? And would it be possible to make it so you don't have to scroll down all the way to find the search box?
