People who complain about "political correctness" are quite a bit worse than "political correctness".

Exactly.

And it should be remembered that a lot of examples they like to go on about are grossly misrepresented, or even simply made up.  (Case in point: Birmingham City Council never tried to rename Christmas as "Winterval", but a lot of the anti-PC brigade will claim that they did.)

The third answer is the obvious answer.  Of course it exists, we can point to examples of it all day long.  Is it a big deal 90% of the time?  Nah.  We should ALL point and laugh at it, not try and score political points.

No, we shouldn't, if you're talking about the "POLITICAL CORRECTNESS GONE MAD!" crowd, then I agree.

I have no idea what you're trying to say.

What I'm saying is that when the Seattle Council on Human Rights tells city employees to stop referring to lunches from home as "brown bags" because somebody thought that somebody else might be offended by it....that we shouldn't go all crazy and complaining that something must be done....we shouldn't do that.  It's not that big of a deal.  We should laugh at it though.  Laugh at it because it's ridiculous.

Why should we laugh about it? I mean, would it not be better just to reform it rather than laugh? I mean, saying we should all laugh is a bit bold if I say so.

How can I reform it?  I can help make the Seattle Council on Human Rights to be embarrassed.  I can't boycot them.  I can't vote 'em out.  Why shouldn't we laugh at it?

If laughing at something is a "bold move" to you, how do you feel about boycots, strikes or nasty letters to the local paper?

No, I'm annoyed that you say we should ALL laugh at it, I mean, not many people find it funny, so saying we should laugh at it regardless of people's opinions is stupid.

Disappointed this - the canonical work on Political correctness - wasn't posted at the very beginning of this thread.

The funny thing is that Political Correctness is prevalent, but it actually is in such a way that actually helps conservatives as much as it does liberals.  I mean, what do you think it is when a bunch of bitchy conservatives protest an edgy piece of artwork or when a bunch of evangelical crazies call for the censorship of controversial movies?  To me that is PC gone mad, though the term is so abused by the Reich wing that I can forgive many liberals for thinking that it's only a legitimate concern of people who don't want to be labeled bigots for using cultural slurs.

If we broadly define political correctness as stating what is socially acceptable and shunning what is not, then it is broadly a good thing. I want to see signs with slurs as much as I want to see: "Superfly: He does have the heart to be a pimp."

People who complain about political correctness are just mad that it's not socially acceptable to be overtly racist/sexist/homophobic anymore.

If by political correctness we mean efforts to neuter opposition to some interests held by certain minority groups, then HP.
