For example I noticed Paul Kemp hadn't posted in awhile, so I checked his last post and it's this:

I think some of the reactions in this thread pretty much reinforce my belief that I'm done here.

Now I have little doubt he'll be back (not the first time he left after all) but that's not the point. The thread in question is actually pretty mundane and there's nothing in it that'd even be delugeable. I honestly can't figure out what in it was so horrible he decided to leave.

And then you often have Gully and oakvale proclaiming "OMG worst thread EVER!" (hell Gully did it right after that) to threads that are at worst fairly boring and somewhat hackish. The really bad threads (any thread where J. J. discusses polling or tries to play internet detective on a current event, Snowstalker derailing talks of current events with idiotic teenage Marxist blather, the Sandra Fluke threads, and just about everything in the 2016 forum for examples) get hordes of people complaining about it and deluging it but not quite such a severe reaction against. That awful thread in 2008 about that McCain volunteer who fabricated an assault on her (which before I called the single worst thread of the 2008 season) is a great example. I just wonder why when things like that happen the real outrage tends to get focused on things as trival as the 500th Hillary in 2016 thread or a handful of people not liking that Nate Silver isn't exclusively focusing on politics anymore.

Has new 538 remained as bad as it was during its first couple of weeks? I've seen them called out for their sloppy use of data a few times since then, but I haven't bothered checking back.

I like it but it's quite far from Nate Silver in his prime.

Pure, uncut irony.

In fairness, here's a good takedown of 538's recent Venezuela article.

It's all a matter of expectations. When you all grow up, you will finally realize that (and yes, since this particular Peter Pan type has not really grown up, my state of realization has not been totally consummated on this either I admit). Not everyone can write as well as angus, argue as well as traininthedistance or alcon or marokai,  have the temperament of Smid, the erudition of that German guy whose name escapes me in a senior moment right now, the map making skills of Miles, or the quantitative/analytical legerdemain of Muon2. And it is good for one's health to chill and not get riled up over trivial stuff, which most stuff around here is.  I mean if I got riled up over what Grumps dishes out my way, I would probably be addicted to Valium or something now. It's just not worth it folks.

Here are some examples (and this doesn't include any that were infracted and deleted):

It's a view as irrational and moronic as Truthers and Birthers.

Kal consider the source. A dumb who believes Link was Einzige.

Kind of weird in hindsight no one suspected it with some of the idiotic sock accusations I've seen (like Link being Einzige, too stupid for words.)

No (normal)

The two had completely different posting styles. Being easily irritable and angry isn't a trait exclusive to Einzige, he would write long sage like posts peppered with insults, Link was just short and snippy. Plus politically they differed on much.

I seriously can't believe anyone thinks that.

Ah but be fair BRTD, it was a truly terrible thread.

If my "truly terrible" you mean "extremely mundane and forgettable" yes. Remember that I had forgotten about it until I looked it up again and can't see anything in it that would qualify as even bad enough to note in the Deluge or anything.

What was wrong with the Sandra Fluke thread?  I see your obsession with JJ continues.

I do hope Mr Kemp returns. Massive FF.

Nothing was deleted. What you see there is exactly as it was. So yeah can someone explain to me what is "truly terrible" about that thread? The only real problem I have with it is that it's actually pretty boring.

No. The triviality is entirely real, but so is the outrage.

I really just want someone to explain what they found so terrible about that thread instead of just repeating "but it was such an awful thread!" with no elaboration.

Could Gully or Kemp explain their bizarre reactions to that thread?

As an aside, it's pretty funny when posters try to show how cool they are by noting how they care nothing for politics. You joined a forum dedicated to discussion about maps and political demographics, for God's sake. Any coolness points were lost years ago.

If I searched for BRTD's references to J.J., there would be at least a 1000 hits.

Kemp isn't posting anymore and Gully never explains his pretentious self. So not going to happen.

It's the internet.  Recreational outrage is everywhere.
