Partially, but on balance, no, for cultural and political reasons.  Large parts of the state may be culturally Southern, but Baltimore and the DC area are more populous and influential, so it's more Northeastern overall.

Yes because the official classification of regions does.

Yes because the official classification of regions does.

The classification is for statistical purposes only. The Census wanted to move MD to the Northeast back in the 1950's due to the changing nature of the state. However, the data users wanted consistency going back to the 1800's so it was left in the South.

Every time I see this thread, all it says is "Do you consider Mary..." and I assume the rest of the sentence is "the Mother of God?" or "Magdalene the wife of Jesus?".

Not really, though they seemed to be southern enough to be Democratic back when southern Democrats were the way they were.

Maryland's sort of a mongrel state culturally, but it certainly can't be said to be Southern. Rural Maryland resembles the areas to its north much more than it does the areas to its south.

No. You never hear "y'all" in Maryland. And also many other factors such as extreme Northern influence. Baltimore is part of the Boston-Washington corridor, where most Americans live.

I say "y'all". Not often. But I do say it.

With that said, no, Maryland is not a southern state.

It was a Slave-State, and Lincoln had trouble keeping them in the Union. But as of today, I guess its both culturally and politically within the North. Not to mention the borderline Humid Continental Climate.

Hell no. And few Marylanders outside the Eastern Shore would consider themselves so either. Culturally, politically, or socially.

The most Southern thing about Maryland is O'Malley's accent.
