Byrd, despite his views on race at the time.

I voted for Byrd in hindsight, but I would haved voted for Revercomb at the time since I come from the only Republican family in West Virginia (my great-grandpa was a member of the state party committee in the fifties, IIRC).

Byrd, for all his flaws, was a masterful Senator, and I do admire shrewd politicians despite their awfulness (KKK, pork, backstabbing Jimmy Carter, etc). I guess I like Robert Byrd in the same twisted way I like Nixon.

As much as I like the Mountain Fiddler, I'd have to go with Revercomb.

I probably would have voted for Chapman Revercomb, as Robert Byrd's racial views at the time would have been too much for me to stomach. BTW, I noticed that there was little political gain for Byrd to join the KKK in the first place, as West Virginia was one of the more racially moderate Southern states in the '40s and '50s.

The problem with that assessment is that West Virginia is not a southern state. It was probably one of the most racially hostile non-southern states.

Good point. West Virginia is actually is more of a border state as opposed to a Southern state.
