I probably would have voted for Chapman Revercomb, as Robert Byrd's racial views at the time would have been too much for me to stomach. BTW, I noticed that there was little political gain for Byrd to join the KKK in the first place, as West Virginia was one of the more racially moderate Southern states in the '40s and '50s.

The problem with that assessment is that West Virginia is not a southern state. It was probably one of the most racially hostile non-southern states.
