What makes you think Chafee is more electable? Is it his toxic approval ratings in deep blue Rhode Island, his constant party switching, or his brilliant foreign policy expertise?

My calculus goes like this: Americans will not elect a crotchety old socialist in (fine, almost) any situation. Sure, Chafee isn't electable but is he more electable than Sanders? Of course.

People voting Chafee are indulging in a very common fallacy when analysing politics. People don't vote based on idealogy.

Sanders' passion and charisma run circles around Chaffee despite Sanders being out of the mainstream on issues.

Sanders faces the risk of what killed McGovern.  if it got to the point where Sanders were nominated, portions of the Democratic power structure would be so scared of losing the party to the actvist/progressive (center)-left that they'd throw their weight behind Jeb and Sanders would lose almost as badly as McGovern (say 56-43).

that wouldn't happen to Chafee, who would get the 'normal' floor of 45-47%.

this is all assuming the GOP doesn't nominate a Cruz/Rand Paul type.   I'm confident they won't.

Sanders is perfectly within the American mainstream on issues if the gauge of that is public opinion.

Both would be disasters as the Dem candidate, but Chafee is more likely to win simply by attacking the Republican as an extremist, assuming it's someone like Cruz or Paul.

Sadly, Sanders is not electable because he is a self-described socialist (which, for an average Joe means almost the same thing as a flaming communist).

Chafee is, well, a joke. A colorless politician who was not even a Democrat until very recently, having switched his affiliation twice in the process. A highly unpopular one-term Governor and Senator defeated for reelection few beside us, political junkies, ever heard of.
