Obviously HP, but a fascinating man as well. I read a biography of him a few months ago, and I was always surprised at how good he was at exploiting the rivalry between Russia and Great Britain to survive (often by bribing the European press), as well as how he managed to outlast all of his rivals.

He certainly was a very adept politician and statesmen, but I don't think that is adequate compensation for all of the Christians and political opponets he murdered.

Certainly. What he did to Armenia alone was one of the worst crimes in history (and there's also Crete, Macedonia, Bulgaria, and so forth), that's how he got the nickname of Abdul the Damned.
