Where would you ideally want the UN HQ to be located?

I think a small (population wise!), stable country with a central location and a fairly neutral profile would be best.

North America is still a good  choice being halfway between Europe and Asia and politically stable, but Canada (East or Pacific) is preferable to the US, since the US has too many global interests.

Singapore would be my choice. Central location on the most important continent, good infrastructure and a small, stable country. Human rights records could be better, but that goes for most countries.

If we're going with Canada, stick it in Ottawa.

I think the acceptance of the international law of diplomacy in the USA mitigates any concern over our global interests interfering with the UN's business.

In my view, the UN ought to be in a true major global city.  That leaves Singapore and NYC in the list.  Singapore is a bad choice just because of the draconian legal system and lack of freedom.  You don't want UN officials, ambassadors, employees or their families dealing with being executed for smoking weed without a jury trial or whatever Singapore likes to do.

Naturally it should be at the birthplace of the United Nations.

I think Singapore is a good spot as well.  Clean.  Modern.  Sufficiently authoritarian so that you wouldn't have to deal with protesters.  In all those respects it's a better location than New York.

Still, chewing gum-laden sidewalks and unruly protest mobs add a bit of personality.  Keep it in New York.

Preferably keep it in New York, but if I had to pick an international location it would definitely be Geneva, Switzerland.  To all intents and purposes, it pretty much is the second capital of the United Nations, even without the organization being headquartered there.

Geneva would be a good choice, plus it is a nice city.

If I had to choose another city, I'd probably say San Francisco or Montreal. Copenhagen, Luxembourg and Vienna would be choices in Europe, Singapore or Hong Kong in Asia.

I think the status quo is fine. If I had to choose the location years ago, I'd have voted for San Francisco. That'd also be my choice if we had to pick a new city.

Either in New York or Geneva, like the old League of Nations.

Seeing as Denmark are a American ally, that alone would be reason to not move it there from New York. Europe in general would also be the wrong signal to send. Of course the best reason would that I doubt most Danes want it in Copenhagen.

Montreal and Vancouver are non-starters for me. If it's going to be in a Western, North American city, New York is the best option.

That said, a strong case could be made for it not being in the west, let alone North America.

Singapore has a good balance of cultural influences, but it is a bit on the authoritarian side. That said, it is balanced in a lot of ways between major movements of the world, although obviously extremely capitalist.

Europe, and especially Switzerland, is already given to much voice in international diplomacy, so scrap that.

So, status quo, but if it had to change for some reason, Singapore.

....or maybe the Maldives.
