I've noticed that I often get invited to Luncheon.  "A luncheon will follow, please try to attend" or "Please indicate your plans to attend luncheon by responding to..."

Usually, I have lunch, and usually it consists of a sandwich in my office, alone, or noodles at home with only my family, but a luncheon consists of slightly fancier sandwiches or soup, and always in the company of familiar, non-familial persons.

Lunch can also consist of burgers and beer.  Luncheon almost never features beer, although it may, from time to time, feature an entrée vaguely resembling a burger.

Which do you prefer, lunch or luncheon?

Interesting choice of words.  Organization.  Yes, I think that may be the key.

Lunch, whether the object or the subject, finds its way into short, uncomplicated sentences.  Luncheon is the subject (or object) of longer, better organized sentences.  Folks often suggest "let's do lunch!" but no one ever suggests "let's do luncheon."  If they want you to "do luncheon" they choose a different verb, rather than the all-purpose "do" verb.  They say things like, "A luncheon will be served after the seminar..." or something like that.

Also, when I think of lunch, I think of situations in which I am allowed to belch or fart with impunity, whereas when I think of luncheon, I think of situations in which I am expected to contain my natural bodily gases.

I think I'm leaning toward lunch, if only for the opportunity to break wind should the urge arise.

The best part about law school is that every day at lunch, from 12 to 1, there are at least 1 or 2 (sometimes up to 5 or 6!) free lunch events, where one of the clubs, organizations, or career services folks brings in a speaker or two. Now, usually, the lunch is pizza. If you're really unlucky, it's going to be sh[inks]ty cheese pizza from Famiglia. That stuff is not good, but if you're late to the other ones (and the lines start EARLY), then sometimes you just gotta settle for Famiglia. There are also other pizza restaurants can commonly deliver; these are usually better. Then you got your sandwich lunches. Now, when you first come to law school, you think these are the bees knees, because you're so sick of pizza every day. But then you realize that there ain't nothing better than a warm lunch, and a cold white bread sandwich with wilted lettuce and questionable cold cut meats just doesn't do it for you anymore. But, don't get sandwich lunches confused with boxed lunches; there, you get a little cardboard box, with a sandwich, a little salad (like pasta or potato), a bag of chips, a fruit and a cookie. Those are good. Maybe the best. They're not warm by any means, but the sandwiches are usually quality (I'm talking roasted peppers, exotic meats, brie cheeses, cranberry chutneys, hummus, all sorts of fancy stuff).

Anyway, that's the basic law school lunches. Sometimes, if you're really lucky, you get the good stuff. For this you need to be in line real early. If you have a class that ends at noon, then you're SOL, because the line starts forming at 11:50. Far and away the best of these lunches is catering from Dinosaur BBQ, a Morningside Heights/Harlem institution. It's a pretty great spread: ribs, BBQ grilled chicken quarters, brisket sometimes, pulled pork sometimes, mac and cheese, usually cole slaw or potato salad, collared greens (these aren't good though), beans, cornbread, etc. Then you also got Roti Roll, which is like Indian burritos basically. These are really good. Less eye-catching than BBQ, sure, but arguably more flavorful, and you don't feel sick afterwards. Their aloo mutter rolls are usually the best. The problem with this is they're expensive, so usually an event will only order like 30 to 50 rolls. And if each person takes two rolls, they go really fast.

Then you've got a range of other catered options. While these are a nice distraction from pizza, they're usually not that great. The Thai is middling. The Italian (big trays of pasta and salad) is pretty gross. One thing you'll see sometimes, which I really like, is Maoz which is like a vegetarian falafel place. Their falafels are nothing to write home about, but the fixings on the side (beet salad, marinated carrots, hummus, great pickles, nice fluffy pita) are all great. Usually you'll see this at the more bleeding heart liberal events. The Student Animal Legal Defense Fund club, for instance, will always have Maoz catered to its event, so I've gone to a lot of things about factory farming and whatever over the years.

Finally, something I've been doing lately, is sneaking into the business school during lunch and nonchalantly eating their food. I don't know what program it is, something to milk rich foreign kids probably, but there's a business school program that has these amazing catered lunches every day for their students. Like, cantaloupe slices wrapped in prosciutto and grilled salmon and chocolate cake and cans of san pellegrino you can take. It's great.

To answer you question, I guess I would consider all these occasions "luncheons" rather than "lunches."

I remember having lots of free meal opportunities in grad school as well.  Maybe not quite as many as you have, but typically ten or so over the course of a semester.  Students were expected to lunch with seminar speakers, candidate grad students, candidates for faculty positions, and the like.  They were always called lunch, often involved free beer, and were quite popular with the grad students.  They generally featured hearty sandwiches with meat, burgers, Indian food, or sometimes chinese food (tea instead of beer on those occasions, of course.)  Some were catered, and some involved taking a billing voucher to a local pub.

I believe that those were genuine lunches, and not luncheons.  At least the food was good, the company was good, and I always felt free to belch and fart.

I don't get those any more.  Here, it's always alcohol-free and we're expected not to fart too loudly.  We do get a "president's supper" twice a year, which features excellent catered food and all the red wine and white wine you can drink.  My wife always comes with me so she can drive us home.

I figure that if there is no free lunch for me, I'd be better off to vote for a flat tax.

Like angus, I'm a brownbagger more often than not, though I'm not as careful and artistic at making my sandwich as angus has described to us in the past.  Occassionally I'll bring in dinner leftovers instead of a sandwich.

But I'm not luncheon guy.  Even at conferences where most people go them, I prefer not to,  unless it's a real small conference where people notice your'e not there.

Today's sandwich featured several thin slices of roast beef, Jarlsberg cheese, tomato, lettuce, and a fresh, thinly-sliced serrano pepper on ciabatta loaf, mayo on the side with tomato, brown mustard on the side with the cheese, of course.  I toasted it lightly before eating it.

The main course was followed by a banana and a handful of Pirates Booty snacks (which also inspired me to learn how to make Sporcle polls.)

Serrano....love them for cooking but they're too hot to eat just like that.  Ouch.  Wink  Yeah, I don't have the patience in the morning to construct such a beauty.

In my experience, a luncheon is a more organized affair that leans closer to a la carte. I don't eat lunch per se, and I don't really eat breakfast per se. I'm a light snacker throughout the day (hummus is a favorite), and then I eat dinner usually somewhere around 6:30 p.m. or 7:00 with lots of wine before and during the meal. I stay away from red meat, so if I attend a luncheon, or a lunch, there first and foremost has to be something there for me to eat, or else I'll weasel out of it. Tongue

Here, a "luncheon" is usually only taken by church ladies and is usually referred to as a "ladies' luncheon" and men cower in fear of such things.

Otherwise it's just "lunch", or if you're being extra Minnesotan, "a little lunch" as in "and after we're done plowing the back 40, Ener and I are heading up town to da cafe for a little lunch now don'tcha know"

Luncheon tomorrow at the library.  12 to 1:30.  I'll have to duck out about 12:50 but I'll go.  My guess is that there will be "wraps" and crisps and a tray of fresh fruit.

The ones that I have attended did not.

The last time I went to a luncheon, I couldn't even find the building.  When I finally showed up, most of the good food was gone...

I was impressed yesterday.  The luncheon actually featured some hot food.  There was a soup with corn, chicken, rice and celery in a broth.  Very hot.  There were sandwiches, of course, and it was buffet-style so I took several.  There was also a warm, baked pasta and cheese dish.  I opted out of that one as I'm not a fan of any of the macaroni and cheese type dishes, but it seemed to have been a hit.  There were also grilled asparagus, zucchini, summer squash, red bell peppers, broccoli, carrots, and cauliflower that were still warm.  (They have a propensity to serve these items cold and raw, which I think is bizarre, and then add insult to injury by providing some heavy sour cream dipping sauce, so I was particularly delighted at the cooked vegetables.)  To drink there was a choice of coffee, tea, and water.  I'd already had too much coffee so I opted for the tea.  (No sugar, no milk, no lemon, thank you.)  It was the individually-wrapped variety, with little bags on a string.  You put steaming hot water into the cup and then let the little tea bag steep for a while.  When I drink tea I normally prefer the loose leaf variety, and that's all we ever use at home, but the bag stuff wasn't terrible.  There were also some little slices of cakes and pies for dessert, but I'm not much into sweets, so I just had a second cup of tea instead.

Overall, I was pleasantly surprised by yesterday's luncheon.

Probably lunch, although I like luncheons, too.  The most likely place to spot me at a luncheon would probably be a Lincoln Day event.
