In July and August of 2008, there was rampant speculation that then Republican nominee John McCain would select Virginia Rep. Eric Cantor as his vice presidential running mate. But it was revealed in May 2009, that Cantor was not even vetted. But if McCain selected him, would they have won?

Cantor would be completely irrelevent. There aren't any VPs I could see winning it for McCain.

I agree but I've always thought that Huckabee was on the ticket, the results would be way closer.

I don't see that much of a difference if John McCain had picked Eric Cantor as his running-mate. Maybe Missouri would have flipped to Obama, but that's about all I can see changing.

The only changes to the official 2008 map is that McCain-Cantor takes New Hampshire, North Carolina. Cantor helps McCain in Connecticut, Pennsylvania, and somewhat in Florida, but Obama still carries those states. Cantor would have provided McCain a powerful boost with fundraising, as Cantor is a prolific fundraiser.

Illinois Senator Barack Obama/Delaware Senator Joe Biden-345 EV

Does Cantor really effect Nebraska's 2nd congressional district though?

He would make no difference whatsoever on the final result.

What would the percentages be between Obama-Biden and McCain-Cantor ?

I still think Bev Perdue (D) would win the NC governorship in 2008 regardless though for the Dems.

Only Virginia and North Carolina flip... Still nowhere near enough for McCain.

On the bright side, Cantor can't possibly destroy the Republican Party more than Sarah Palin has.

Cantor is a fairly disciplined politician. Without the Palin sideshow, I think North Carolina, Virginia, and Indiana flip. Still not nearly enough, because there's no way McCain could have won after the economic crisis.

How would the Senate races be affected by McCain-Cantor vs Obama-Biden ?

You also have to make up for the fact that Palin got people to the polls that probably wouldn't have showed up for VP Cantor.

In other words, McCain was screwed regardless.
