"Hurrah for the President! Hurrah for the Union!" was the cheer at the Union Convention. President Grover Cleveland, despite economic stagnation, had won renomination. Vice President Henry F. Adams would also be nominated for a second term as Vice President - any perceived support for Nelson Aldrich was little more than the murmurings of a few adherents to Conkling, the Unionists of yesteryear.

General George Custer would be met with similar fanfare at the People's Alliance convention. This new cabal of former Whigs and Radicals were still determined to achieve full union, despite the threat of creating further division. Though Joseph F. Smith would make an eloquent speech, but was overwhelmingly passed over in favor of the popular George Custer. Joseph Smith was to be nominated Vice President, out of fear of losing the new state of Babel to Cleveland and his efforts to reach out to Mormons. Emboldened by their merger with the Radical Party, they look forward to the general election.

The Radical Convention of 1888 would be its last. Having lost its Sumnerite wing to the formation of the People's Alliance and the seeming diffusal of the polygamy issue, some begged the question of why the party should persist. Former Speaker John Ingalls would make a tearful speech, urging the Radical party to continue, but it was not to be. "The delegates of this convention vote to end this great political party, and to cede all existing networks to the Alliance. So be it," said a somber Francis Lyman, who was the presiding officer of the convention.

Some members of the Whig establishment attempted a similar, ham-handed effort to merge the parties. Though they expected little opposition, the rank-and-file delegates rose up in rancorous fury. In revolt, the delegates nominated Zebulon Vance, Governor of North Carolina. Zebulon Vance is regarded as politically conservative, or "Crockettarian," but has been renowned throughout the South for his tolerant policies toward blacks, including suffrage which has been rescinded in some Southern states. Senator Henry Teller of Babel is selected as VP for this impromptu ticket.

The Destiny Party, enamored with George Custer's legacy, has voted to nominate him.

Three days.

Ah heck, I'll go with Vance. EDIT: And of course, the one time I choose the non-Radical/People's Alliance candidate, they're in third place.

People should support Custer/Smith then, I guess.

Tough decision to leave Cleve and Adams, but I'll go Vance who seems to be quite the FF, esp in this timeline.

He's one vote away from first place Tongue

I'd urge everyone to support Vance/Teller.

I'd urge everyone to support Vance/Teller.

He was three votes away when I posted, and I thought it would be more of a runaway Cleveland win.

So I guess I re-amend my statement to ask everyone who's anti-Cleveland to please unite on a candidate.

This will most likely go to the House.

Fair enough. I'm just sick of losing. I look forward to the House election if there is one.

Wait until gone, say, 1960 for left wing dominance. Maybe 1932. Tongue

I just want to see one left-wing victory before I leave on my mission (on May 2nd). Just one win.

Goddammit, it's 12-11-11! How about we vote for the next one of Vance or Custer to get a vote?

It seems like it's going to go to the House anyway, so no worries.

Joseph Smith as VP would be a good farewell gift to Zioneer.

Honestly, I don't really care all that much, just kind of annoyed at one-party dominance of the White House. Have my preferred candidate for VP or not, I don't care.

By the way, if this 12-12-11 thing keeps up, I think Vance/Smith would be a nice compromise that would please everyone except Those People.
