Those fascists, trying to end a ridiculous prohibition of growing a harmless plant.  [/Lief]

A victory for the Tenth Amendment and, even more importantly, common sense.

We need to do the same down here

I think Kinky Friedman is running on a pro-hemp platform. Do I waste a vote?

Teabagging fascists is a very impolite thing to do. Even when they are doing hurtful things such as this.

I think it's safe to say that if it is a terrible policy continued under the Obama administration, Lief will defend it. Tongue

The only reason hemp was outlawed in the first place was that the DuPont family and the DuPont Company wanted to create more demand for the synthetic fibers they produced by limiting the natural fiber options on the market.

That sort of thing is precisely why we need stricter limits on the amount of money people and corporations (which are apparently the same thing) can give to politicians.

I doubt the Tea Partiers seeking to do this understand why it happened in the first place, or that the policies they support would only give more power to companies like DuPont to do that sort of thing.

I know that hemp protein can be sold in this country (at Whole Foods, natch), but it can't be grown in this country. Such a bizarre prohibition.

Look, the idea is fine... but nullificiation has been discredited and rejected since 1809. U.S v Peters Why would we as a country want to deal with it again?

Dude it's your side (I assume you still associate with the Republicans) who are a bigger roadblock to rationalization of drug laws. The Democrats ain't great but the Republicans are worse. I doubt a Republican president would have allowed the recreational sales in Colorado and Washington. I fear there will be a crackdown after 2016 in case a Republican wins (or Hillary for that matter).

I have my card of affiliation to go to their conventions and vote, but Republicans tend to only get about a quarter to a third of my votes cast.

I wouldn't call the South Carolina law a nullification law.  All it does is specify that for purposes of South Carolina law, industrial hemp is not marihuana (providing penalties for growing hemp in a manner intended to conceal the growing of marihuana) and uses the definition of industrial hemp under Federal law to define industrial hemp under South Carolina law.  I realize it is quite tempting to use the words South Carolina and nullify in the same sentence, but if anything, this law is recognizing the supremacy of Federal law and leaving the regulation of industrial hemp in the hands of the Federal government.

The whole right-wing was backing Cliven Bundy, who doesn't even recognize the existence of the federal government. Needless to say, they're off the deep end.

"Hemp should be legal because I can make money off of it, but cannabis shouldn't be legal because I don't like those people inhaling its' smoke!"

Yep, still fascists.

Not Quite... At this point, given the popular opinion in favor of legalization, it makes more sense to have restricted recreational marijuana than banning it outright.

Also I'm uncertain whether marijuana legalization is/should be a Federal or a State issue.

Well by your earlier reasoning it doesn't matter. Federally it is illegal thus CO and WA are wrong to nullify federal law. You cannot criticize the entire notion of nullification but leave random exemptions.

Also, since when is public opinion for allowing industrial hemp not at least the same or greater than recreational? Following your (sound) logic which pointed you to believe WA and CO are not in the wrong, the logical conclusion for states legalizing hemp should be the same.
