Red for the left and blue for the right.

The question is: What did "left" and "right" mean back then?
Who was more left-wing? The Democratic-Republican Party or the Federalists?
And which parties were left-wing or right-wing in 1860?
I guess that Abraham Lincoln was considered the liberal candidate in 1860, whereas John Breckenridge was considered the more conservative candidate.
