Upon seeing a White Hispanic, most folk will deem him/her as White until he/she opens his/her mouth and tells he/she is Hispanic. Even though Hispanic is not a race, for practical purposes, its a distinct race upon which anyone south of the Rio Grande is fatally included. Same works for Hispanics of any race except those of mixed Native American/White ancestry.

For political purposes, he/she'll be deemed either, depending entirely which one is better on the Racecard game. Remember Trevor Martin's case? The guy whom killed him is half-Peruvian and most folk agree he looks far, very far from White. Yet, liberals all over the country didn't think twice before blaming everything upon the white racist guy whom killed the "poor" black child.

When Ted Cruz or Marco Rubio walk into a Wall-Mart, loss prevention sees a white person.

Well, one of Cruz' parents was born in Cuba, and Rubio's parents were from Cuba as well.

Can we not talk about race instead?

I'm a White Hispanic too. If I was a liberal candidate, media and the Dems would label me "Latino". If I was a conservative candidate, they'd call me White.

I love how we're debating whether or not something "counts" as a race. Race is a social construct; people who create false parameters only perpetuate the concept's falsity.

That's probably true. I mean, you don't see many people claiming that Robert Menendez isn't Hispanic.

^^ This.

"Hispanic" ain't a race. But neither is "white" or "black".

Indeed. That common construction of "whiteness" is relevant to politics and should not be ignored. The folks pictured above have all been discussed in the context of their presidential ambitions and how their "non-whiteness" will help them. My point is to say that to the average voter, the guy who sees Rubio or Cruz a handful of times on TV before voting will mentally pigeon-holed them as white. Many of us politicos, the kind of people who go read a sh**t-ton about a candidate and have these conversations will be aware of their hispanic ancestry. Thus we are be able to make a conscious choice as to whether to -hyphenate them, to make them "ethnic" candidates based on uniquely American, colonial conceptions of race, or to acknowledge them as white within our present racial structure.

Sort of like how many people seem to think that the Tsarnaevs weren't white because they're Muslim…

If Cruz and Rubio were liberal Democrats, this thread would not exist.

And Cruz looks like a cross of Pat Buchanan and Joe McCarthy.

I always thought of him as looking more similar to William Jennings Bryan.
