https://www.cbsnews.com/news/what-are-the-laws-of-war-punishment-war-crimes/

War is always a great tragedy. Too many people die.
I don't know how long until the world will move in the direction of peace, but I don't see it happening in the foreseeable future.
It is not only civilian deaths and injuries that are tragedies, but the soldiers as well.
Soldiers are often extremely young (I consider 21 and younger extremely young), who have their whole lives ahead of them, and the death of a young person is a horrible tragedy.

Peace alone is not enough though, one major cause of war is *unjust* peaces.

yes, an unjust peace is usually only stable if the losers are either deported or have their population reduced by assimilation or genocide. If it's a multiethnic state like pre-WW1 Hungary it can lose its offensive capability by being reduced to its core but even then revanchism will still linger. Assimilation is a non-starter in this case which only leave the nasty options if you want to implement a stable unjust peace.

Off the top of my head, no perfidy, no use of prohibited weapons, particularly chemical ones, no targets which are not military targets.

Peace alone is not enough though, one major cause of war is *unjust* peaces.

Another major cause, though, is *incomplete* peaces, which is why Armistice Day led to a Second World War but Victory Day did not lead to a Third. (Which isn't to say that the Western Allies in 1918 should've overrun and occupied Germany -- that was not politically feasible -- but in a theoretical world of much greater resources the outcome would've been better.)

The Roman-Persian Wars lasted 681 years, and would've kept going if not for the Muslim conquest of Persia, which lasted 22 years. The difference is enlightening.

Of course the phrase "peace and justice" is very common.
Unfortunately not everyone will agree on how to achieve that

Win so you don't get convicted of war crimes.

Technically, the law of armed conflict and international law about the reasons for going to war are different things.
