If an alien (be it human or extraterrestrial) asks you:
"Tell me something about the State of X, about its people, about its government, about its landscape, about its climate, about its history, about its elections, about its industry, about its agriculture, and so on",
what state(s) would make you hit the brick wall of your knowledge?

My opinion:

1.) Oregon. Don't get me wrong; I don't dislike this state, and there quite many Oregonian users I like. But I hardly know anything about its politics and how its people think (beside the fact that they are -overall - very liberal, with a quite conservative eastern part.) Plus, it is a late primary state.
To me, Oregon is just a state created in order to fill up the vacuum between California and Washington.

2.) South Dakota. Even though home land of North America's most famous mountain, I know very little about its politics. A safe Republican state and traditionally one of the last states to hold a primary, it is almost completely beyond media's radar range. Seriously, why do we need two Dakotas?

3.) Nebraska. If it didn't split its electoral votes, nobody, even in this forum, would give anything for this state.

4.) Rhode Island Seriously, why does it have the right to be a state? If it hadn't been for the TV series, this state would never have been mentioned in the media.

5.) Kansas Only thanks to Christian extremists it's been finding its way to the media (Brownback, Phelps etc.).

In no particular order...

1.) Idaho - Not much about it.  Frank Church was from there, potatoes are from there, and pretty much everywhere you look is "nature porn," as Mint once said.  But beyond that, there's not much about Idaho that you can talk about for longer than thirty seconds.

2.) North Dakota - South Dakota without Mount Rushmore.  It also has the best economy out of all the fifty states and is the only state to maintain its own government-run bank, but who besides politics and economics nerds cares about that stuff?

3.) Delaware - It's located by the Atlantic Ocean, it's the first state, and Joe Biden is from there.  Oh, and a lot of credit card companies are located there.  Moving on.

4.) Ohio - Ohio is a state that I can't understand why anyone would live there.  I mean, yes, it has its share of cities and small towns like any other state does, but other than that what makes it so different from other Midwestern states?  People only care about it when an election comes up.

5.) Rhode Island - One of what I like to privately refer to as "The Bulls[Inks] States."  It's essentially just an extension of Connecticut.

Honorable mention: Connecticut.  I obviously couldn't say I know nothing about it since I've lived here all my life, but even now I don't see anything remarkable about it.

To be honest, I can't say I'm really familiar with any US State, except from a strictly electoral perspective.

South Dakota.  People make fun of North Dakota's obscurity, but it's so famous for being unknown that South Dakota is more ignored.

Delaware is the runner-up.

EDIT:  Now that I understand the question, Delaware is probably the state I'm least familiar with.  I think South Dakota is least known by the general public.

The Dakotas, Alabama, Delaware, Connecticut, Nebraska, Oregon, Rhode Island, Maine, Pennsylvania, and a couple of others that I can't even bother to remember. I do know Utah and Nevada fairly well though.

All of my memories of Delaware involve stopping at gas stations on the way to real places.

I actually know a fair bit about North Dakota, and could potentially squirk out an awkward screed about South Dakota featuring Sitting Bull and Mount Rushmore.

I suppose New Mexico or Montana. I don't know much about either state to be frank.

Delaware is a fictional state Joe Biden made up, so he can serve in the Senate.

That's why it's called "The State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations"

5.) Rhode Island - One of what I like to privately refer to as "The Bulls[Inks] States."  It's essentially just an extension of Connecticut.

RI is not like Connecticut at all. It's a little more similar to Massachusetts, but still very distinctive in culture.

4.) Rhode Island Seriously, why does it have the right to be a state? If it hadn't been for the TV series, this state would never have been mentioned in the media.
We separated from Massachusetts and were founded on the idea of Religious Freedom and Separation of Church and State in the early 1600's (first place to have those ideas in the West), started the American Revolution with the burning of the Gaspee, were the first to declare independence, refused to join the Union until the Bill of Rights was passed, and started the American Industrial Revolution, among other things.

Wyoming or Delaware. Incidentally, that's where the current and previous Vice Presidents have been from. Other than that, I know that Wyoming was the first state to give women the right to vote and Delaware was the first state to ratify the Constitution.
