"The Virginia-based group, Americans for Prosperity, has sent mailers to some households in Franklin County urging a ‘no’ vote on Issue 6, a proposed 1.25 mill property tax levy for the Columbus Zoo.

We are engaged in local issues, in state issues, on federal issues. There is no issue we won’t get involved in if you’re going to raise taxes,” says Miller.

The one page glossy ad claims the tax levy, if approved, hurts disabled and elderly residents who live on fixed incomes."

http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/politics/2014/04/why-the-koch-brothers-are-tangling-with-jungle-jack-hanna/

The article states neither side commented how much they were spending for/against the levy, but other news reports indicate AFP sunk over $20k into the mailing. The pro-levy forces admittedly have raised over $500k, but presumably little to none came from outside Central Ohio.

Yet other articles state the levy will increase property taxes less than $2/month per $100k of assessed property value.

I for one am glad these Kansas billionaires have taken such an interest in my hometown. Those zoo animals have had it too easy for too long! Why can't they pull their own weight? Train the elephants to dance for paid shows at 1:00, 3:00, and 4:30. Why not teach the gorillas to pull rented family rickshaws from pavilion to pavilion? And I'm just saying that open parlor betting on lion vs. tiger fights could bring in the cheddar (hey, if it was good enough for the Romans....).

If this socialist levy passes, collective farms and government-run indoctrination camps are clearly the next step in our national decline. God bless you Koch Brothers!

The Koch Brothers, inflexible libertarians at heart, cannot stand taxpayer money being spent on anything that does not financially benefit them directly.

Come children, the disabled exhibit is next and then we'll go see the lions!

If they are so against a publicly funded zoo, why don't they donate their own money to build it? Tongue

Sadly, the disabled exhibit was closed due to budget cuts and we had to put down all the sub-people.

What have they advocated for taxpayer money being spent on that financially benefits them directly?

Cleaning up environmental disasters and pollution created by their industry.

Rather than attacking the issue at hand for "hurting the elderly," the AFP should be attacking Kasich for not expanding the homestead tax exemption on higher-income seniors and also giving Franklin County more than 3 times the per-capita funding that Cuyahoga County got for political reasons, decreasing populations and smaller amount of institutions, and Kasich's next cut to the income tax. Still though, Franklin taxpayers should have no problem being able to cough up funding for a zoo when you guys have the 7th lowest unemployment rate in the state compared to Cuyahoga's 78th, so Franklin can undoubtedly afford it and simply a poor excuse by the AFP to say the least.

They're a great attraction and bring in revenue, the animal exhibits obviously need to be maintained, it's simply just the right thing to do and there's no need for voters to be "educated" about it as Miller claims, and if the AFP really manage to convince enough rural and suburban voters to vote against it to get the levy to fail, then the Kasich favoritism has got to end because you guys have it off easy down there compared to us. Sad

Unfortunately Cuyahoga County is choosing to spend tax dollars on sports facilities rather than letting it go towards more important infrastructure projects or our own zoo, but it would make zero sense for AFP to come in here when the county is underfunded as is and the county government is trying to relieve the huge tax burden as much as humanly possible.

I mean this in the nicest way possible, but the AFP and other outside groups trying to make sure this measure fails need to get the Buck out of the state. Smiley
