The decision came after the Washington legislature refused to tie standardized test scores to teacher evaluations.

The loss of the waiver means Washington no longer has a say in how $40 million in federal education spending will be spent. Jay Inslee has released a statement saying layoffs and cuts to certain programs will come shortly.

You all realize that Obama and his cronies have been implementing and people like Oprah and Cory Booker have been funding the dismantling of the existing public education system? This is nothing but the logical conclusion of the neoliberal trend we've been going on since Carter. Common Core is just the first step to destroy the teachers' unions and ultimately the entire public system.

If Washington wants to become a state of illiterates, then I don't think we should fund and encourage them.

Meh. It's basically a certificate based education system, which is superior to what we have now. Certificate-based signaling games are also better for workers in the labor market.

The problem is tying teacher compensation or tenure to a nominal performance statistic. Teachers aren't allowed to fire their bad students. Doesn't really make sense to give them managerial incentives.
