It's becoming more and more obvious that allowing Staten Island to elect its own representatives was a huge mistake.

At least Fossella wasn't charged with corruption.

Nothing will EVER top the hilarious clusterf**k that was the 2008 race for this seat, but this could be interesting.

If Grimm doesn't resign, there are only 3 ways for his name to be taken off the ballot:

A) He's convicted before November
B) He moves out of New York
C) He runs for a judgeship

Possible GOP replacements for Grimm are State Sen. Andrew Lanza, NYC Councilman James Oddo, Assemblywoman Nicole Malliotakis, and you know him, you love him, former Rep. Vito Fossella.

A big problem the Staten Island GOP has is that most of their Assembly/Senate seats they hold are Safe R, and as such the voting record of most of their bench is pretty far to the right of the ideal candidate for a Obama 2012 seat.

Haha, wonderful. A gift of a few more seats like this and the 2014 elections will be a basic wash; no advantage (beyond a couple of Senate seats) to either party.

Rothenberg says Lean D too. Most of the analysis is a comparison between Grimm and Bill Jefferson. Yikes.

It's possible they could try scheduling a trial prior to November due to the pressing need to clear his name to voters a la Ted Stevens, but holding a 20 count federal corruption trial only 6 months after indictment would be FAST.

Do the NY Dems retake the Senate this year? They might re-redistrict to make Grimm's Democratic successor more safe.

The GOP is preparing to withhold all re-election support until Grimm is no longer on the ballot.

Assemblywoman Nicole Malliotakis, a Grimm ally, is gearing up for a run should Grimm be taken off.

Grimm is accused to failing to report more than 1 million dollars in income from his restaurant, which showed losses on his tax return, plus hiding wages to avoid paying employment taxes. How did Grimm pay his bills, if his restaurant was losing money?  From the cash he took out of the till and failed to report of course. Grimm will be resigning soon. He's done. He will plea bargain, and spend a couple of years in jail. So the Dems are getting a bit ahead of themselves here in putting this seat in their column. They just won't have Grimm to kick around much longer.

His name will stay on the ballot, methinks.  I suspect Grimm will act like a typical Staten Islander and try to fight it out.
