Paul von Hindenburg was an independent right wing candidate, Marx was from Zentrum and represented the center to left Weimar coalition, and Thalmann was from the Communist Party.
It have often heard that had Germany elected a pro-democracy candidate in Marx they could have avoided the degeneration of democracy that occured during Hindenburg's term.

Interesting. Not to criticize your choice, but I am interested in what a conservative Democrat would see in Hindenburg that they wouldn't in the relatively centrist Marx.

DC, and of course you would have supported HindenBURG. You're a calvinist monarchist, I fail to see how you could have voted for Marx whose his party was relatively pro Weimar republic (even if it became a bit rightwing after 1930). And he was catholic. The catholic/prostestant divide was important at this time.
Since he is a constitutional monarchist rather than a dictatorial one, I would think DC may have fit well in the DVP.
