I agree with most of the people in this thread. Him running again is unlikely, but not implausible. If a)Bush doesn't run, b)Christie doesn't recover, and c)no one else emerges as an establishment favorite, Romney could run. I'd put the chances around 10%.

I think it's worth noting that he'll be 69 in 2016, which is old but not that old.

I don't think Bush wants to run.

Christie's not getting the media buzz he needs to be getting in order to be considered a serious candidate.

Why is nobody in the establishment looking at Walker we keep hearing how Jeb or Romney need to run but is there something about Walker that scares them?

He's VERY divisive for a national candidate after breaking the public employee unions in WI, much more so than Bush or (pre-Bridgegate) Christie. He could still win, but Bush and Romney (despite his own "rich guy" baggage) don't start off with every union family in the country intensely mobilized against them.

In fact, this is why I would never support Walker. Not many people outside of Wisconsin know Scott Walker; the ones who do are the union families who hate him.

Also, lol that everyone suddenly thinks the Romney '16 run is now plausible. I was preachin' this line of thought ages ago. Long story short, the Republican field sucks this year. Mitt could definitely win the nomination. I don't know if he'd win the general election, but he'd certainly do better than the likes of Rand Paul or Bobby Jindal or whichever other lunatic vying for the job.

It isn't very nice of Romney to blackmail Jeb into running like this.

I can't see Jeb running against Hillary. I don't think he wants the presidency as much as she does, nor is he (or anyone else on earth) interested in a Clinton vs Bush election.
It'd be hilarious if he ran, picked Ben Quayle, Clinton runs and picks Albert Gore Jr. (Wins in 2008), and Ross Perot Jr. launched an Independent campaign of his own. I'd laugh at that.

I can't see Al Gore Jr wanting to be VP again.

Romney is just an awful candidate.

If Jeb ran in 2012, Romney wouldn't have even won the primary. Jeb would've been able to turn most of Colorado, Florida, Virginia, Ohio, New Hampshire and New Mexico into Republican wins. Not to mention, he'd have a strong chance in Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Pennsylvania. Big mistake not running in 2012.

That's only four years after the end of his older brother's presidency.  I take it you're not that concerned with that legacy overshadowing Jeb Bush as he prepares to take the plunge for 2016.

It would fit right in with the long-standing comparison to Robert Taft.

It would fit right in with the long-standing comparison to Robert Taft.

or to William Jennings Bryan.
Someone else mentioned Dewey.

He ran for the Republican nomination in 1936, and lost.
He then ran for the nomination in 1940 as a northeastern Governor, and won the nomination but lost the general.
He sought the nomination again in 1944, and once again lost the general.

Romney might hope for similarities to Reagan, who won the presidency in his third go-around at age 69.

A third scenario is Al Smith, a northeastern governor who sought the nomination in 1924 and lost. He won the nomination four years later and lost the general. And he lost the nomination again in 1932 and lost in the effort.

at first blush the idea seems crazy...

then you look at the list of potential gop candidates.

id say mitt is more electable than most of them.

I think Dewey is the best comparison. For some reason I had placed Taft as the nominee in 1940... Dewey is definitely Romney.
