The Union convention was demure and uneventful, despite the closeness of the balloting. Henry Adams, the former Vice President and iconoclastic intellectual, was considered by many as a favorite for the nomination. However, a strong surge of support arose behind Calvin Brice, an eccentric millionaire from Ohio who had dabbled in trusts. Support for Brice (or rather, opposition to Adams) rose due to skepticism about Adams' views on trusts, and his deviance on the currency issue. After some negotiations, the rabble-rousers settled down, and a compromise was reached of Adams and Brice.

At the People's Alliance Convention, there had been a rancorous amount of support for Senator William Allen. His delegates decried the Vance administration as "sclerotic, milquetoast, and ineffective." However, it was obvious that the People's Alliance establishment held the cards, and after the first round of balloting, the People's Alliance Convention agreed to nominate the incumbent President and Vice President, for a 'coalition government.'

President Vance was received much better at the Whig Convention. Despite the bluster of James Weaver and Roger Mills at the convention floor, neither of them made much of an impact. Some chalk this up to the Whig Party's elation at winning the White House for the first time since the days of Lincoln, due to the lackluster state of affairs in the United States. The Whig Convention voted not to nominate a Vice President to protest unity with the People's Alliance, but Joseph Smith was considered the 'nominee' in practicality.

Three days.

Adams, reluctantly. The damned weaklings in charge of my party forced me to back him by nominating that weakling Vance!

Allen in '96! (or some other angry anti-Vance statement)

I'm voting Vance purely for party unification purposes. I don't particularly like either ticket.

How do you figure?

I'll include a merger option in 1896 but the result of this election won't have any bearing on that.

I feel like a successful election will help the parties merge on views and electability concerns.

There were several attempts on my part to merge the two (with Walter Gibson and Benjamin Harrison running in both conventions) and it didn't work out so seamlessly. Similarly, in 1888, I had expected the Whigs to merge with the PA outright, but Zebulon Vance won instead.

Sorry about that.

Per past practice, Zebulon Vance is the winner. I'll have 1896 up tonight/tomorrow with an accompanying map.
