http://www.reuters.com/article/2014/05/02/us-afghanistan-landslide-idUSBREA410MP20140502One of the worst landslides in recent memory hit a village in the Argo District, Badashkhan Province, Afghanistan in the past twenty-four hours.
Villagers are looking for survivors but many officials said the section of the mountain that slid, was too large to expect significant numbers of survivors.
Naweed Forotan, the spokesman for Badakshan provincial Governor Shah Waiulleh Adeeb, said that a total of 2,100 people were trapped, and that "The Government and locals from surrounding villages are helping with the rescue and they so far have recovered over one hundred bodies".
Colonel Abdul Qadeer Sayad, a deputy police chief in Badakshan said that at least one hundred people were being treated for injuries.
A U.N Representative stated that roads to Kabul were open but that they were "unsuitable for heavy machinery", which Sayad says is needed to search for bodies.
Mark Bowden, the U.N Humanitarian Coordinator for Afghanistan said that it may be "some time" before a clear picture of the damage is available.
President Obama, and Chancellor Merkel, at the White House reiterated their respective nations commitment to Afghanistan, and it's continuing rebuliding.
