I guess it's time for this.  Better to have just one go-to thread instead of dozens all over the place.


Today Obama held a joint press conference with Angela Merkel to discuss the situation in Ukraine, and even field questions about the cruel and unusual punishment doled out in Oklahoma three days ago.  You know, actually newsworthy stuff.

At about the same time, the House GOP announced it's putting together another committee to help create jobs and increase the minim-... oh sorry, I meant investigate Benghazi.

Somehow I doubt they had one later that had the left one saying Goal 7 million, and the right one saying Actual 8 million.

It all comes down to

(1) the lack of credibility that FoX News has among a large part of the public, and
(2) the ease of creating the equivalent of a false document on the Web. False documents can take the form of graphics.

A hoax of this nature depends upon people believing that FoX News would create such a graph to deceive its viewers. The sorts who might fall for this false document generally don't watch FoX often enough to know more than its conventions, including logos and color schemes.

The false document (or in this case the false graphic) is a typical tool of propaganda.

Yeah, it didn't look quite crisp enough to be real. But you can't deny that Fox News has made a habit out of intentionally deceiving stats about Obamacare, so it's easy to see why this would have been believed.

It is - but the fact that so many people here accepted it as something they could plausibly run a more damning indictment of Fox's journalistic credibility than anything else.
