A lot of politicians seem to think reddit as a strong liberal community that would be favorable to all the ideals of the Democratic Party but I think it's more  libertarian than liberal most of the users are males between 18-29 so the ideal group that appeals to libertarianism. Some staffer probably told him this was a way to reach out to young liberal millennials.

Yeah, reddit is a very right-wing/libertarian website.

Uh, r/politics is like the left's version of Breitbart.

Politics on Reddit is very polarized; you have the Ron Paul fanatics and libertarians on one side, and Elizabeth Warren/Bernie Sanders fanboys on the other.

Either way, most of them are neckbeard types that any serious politician shouldn't take seriously. They're just as bad and reactionary as die hard Fox News viewers.

Yeah, reddit is a very right-wing/libertarian website.

Reddit is very politically diverse but on balance it's probably mildly left-leaning.

Reddit is very diverse, but on reflection it could be summed up as left-leaning on economics, but with a very, very strong civil libertarian streak.

So a place establishment politicians would want to avoid.

It's quite a bizarre place to categorise politically.

They seem to want Scandinavian style healthcare, heavy infrastructure and low tuition fees, but at the same time are opposed to gun control, identity politics, feminism and leftist politics. They fetishise science to an absurd degree (coming from someone studying science) and are generally supportive of all "futuristic" solutions.

Oh, and they have a huge racist undercurrent running through it, but as long as you don't upset their pet issues, you'll be fine.

I don't know why it's considered dignified for any political figure to do this on a website that has sections about drugs and pornography. In previous times this would have been considered a scandal. Tipper would have never let Al do this, even if it was his invention.

I don't think Reddit was the problem here. Read a few of O'Malley's responses; it's as if he doesn't realize that he's talking to human beings. He'd have been ripped apart for this lame performance in plenty of venues.
