Even if she did exceed her authority by doing this, which seems strange, this does not seem like something that should prevent her from holding office.  Looks like the judges are taking sides.

Totally ridiculous.

It must be noted that the future monarch and the Shinawatra's are old friends and he now controls the sections of the army that have previously been involved in coups. So, if the King was to die soon the Democrats would be ed for awhile I think.

Simfan, is there any possibility of having, I don't know, Sirindhorn, or somebody else, take the throne? Vajiralongkorn's heir presumptive (because he's the oldest--and only, for that matter--child Vajiralongkorn has with his current wife) Dipangkorn Rasmijoti is nine years old; a boy king would I think be clearly preferable to a dissolute wreck of an adult, but by how much would depend partially on the regency, wouldn't it? Are there any machinations that could be undertaken within the royal family to at least take a step towards defusing the situation?

Why didn't Thaksin just agree to break with Vajiralongkorn after like the 3rd time one of his governments was toppled?

Also, how come a majority of Thais like Thaksin if they hate his buddy Vajiralongkorn?

Why would he? Vajiralongkorn is Thaksin's meal ticket to permanent power. Thaksin is the prince's bankroller (the king has tried to limit his spending). Although you wonder what the benefit to Vajiralongkorn would be once he comes to power and comes into the $35 billion the Crown Property Bureau controls.

Thaksin has done things for them, the relationship can be overlooked, or, as some people have started doing, used to rehabilitate the Prince. (People have marched saying "We love the crown prince!")

This all sounds very George IV

Why do all the rank and file Yellow shirts get so worked up though? If it's really about the monarchy, why don't they just say it?

You have a strong oversimplifying tendency in your thinking.

He is right. The yellow shirts are just upset that they can't win an election.

Of course they are. The more interesting question, the one that I think Simfan was trying to answer, is why they would want or feel the need to.

I saw on Wikipedia that the Prime Minister attempted to form a government in exile from within the American embassy, which the State Department has denied.

Which Prime Minister, Yingluck or Niwatthamrong?

Either way, not letting her/him do that is a vaguely disappointing move (vaguely to the extent that I still think the Thaksinites are vaguely preferable to the military in the short term at least), but not really a surprising one.

I assumed Niwatthamrong. Has Yingluck been detained in all of this?

opebo being banned and Simfan being unbanned is shaping up to be a pretty good trade, at least as far as Thailand-related threads are concerned. With Simfan you get a generally similar slant of analysis to opebo's without the gloating, glibness, or obsession with prostitution.
