What's the point in doing these coups anyway if they allow elections afterwards? It's pretty clear Thaksinites are a majority, and they're going to win any election, no matter when it's held. If they don't want that to happen, the only way to go is a full-fledged dictatorship.

It's becoming obvious there will be no elections until these people do what they came here to do. Or until they're all shot, which, with the tack they've been taking, is not an outside possibility. I mean this is only the second coup against Thaksin.

But what did they come here to do, exactly? My understanding was that they came here to crack down on the redshirts.

They came here to prevent Vajiralongkorn from becoming King.

Why?

I'm not exactly a Thaksin fan, you know. I just think the people's decision should be respected.

The use of multiple colors on the signs seems unnecessary.

The only way this coup is good news is if it results in a 30 year economic boom in the vein of Suharto '66. Otherwise it's a tragedy.

Beet, have you missed the script?  This is one step in a waltz.  Step 2 is the military restores democracy two years or so down the road and Step 3 is the people of Thailand voting one of Thaksin's cronies/family members into office again.  Then we'll go back to Step 1, the coup.  This isn't a new thing.

So the military is acting on behalf of the Crown Prince now?

I was under the question that the military by and large opposed the (in absolute fairness to the military, unbelievably odious) Crown Prince.

His father seems like a pretty decent guy by royal standards (done things in the past like open up the royal palace to provide refuge to protesters being slaughtered by the military.) Guessing his son is not like that at all?

Yeah seeing as the Prince is both a) a indebted, hedonistic and erratic playboy and b) a crony of Thaksin (they have a rather mutualistic relationship going on)

He pretty much epitomizes decadence.

So he's basically opebo, but pro-Thaksin?

Damn now I really wish we still had opebo to know what his views of the Crown Prince would be!

Wait a minute, are these people who were arrested linked to the Crown Prince or to his sister?

If they're actually linked to the Crown Prince/Thaksin, it makes totally sense and isn't really surprising at all. It's either business as usual OR, as you suggest, maybe the Crown Prince has turned on his own former supporters.

At first I thought you said these people were linked to the king's daughter though.

Since Western governments like so much to complain about attacks on press freedom in foreign countries, why are they so mute about that oppressive law?

The US media rarely talks about foreign nations at all.
