He's right. It's high time for single-payer.

Ophthalmologists are doctors, but they're not doctors. They don't go through the grind of the other medicine fields.

The science of ophthalmology is practically perfected. Eye surgeries are low risk and highly effective. It's a transparent organ that is easy to screen for disease and people regularly do eye exams more than any health checkup. Cancer rates are pretty low, too. On top of it, optometrists handle most of the job in vital records gathering for them.

As a result, yes, from an ophthalmologist's point of view, health insurance is too complicated. But he doesn't need to hedge his bets against patient death, he doesn't need complex medical records because he probably only sees a patient once or twice in their lifetimes, and his operating costs are too low to need to haggle with insurers.

Their views on medicine are completely worthless.

It's not that simple. I'm nearsighted and as a result have to see an ophthalmologist once a year for a regular checkup. Furthermore, their work is important because eye problems can often be warning signs for more serious illnesses in other parts of the body. Your ophthalmologist might be the one who indirectly helps you find out you have diabetes or high blood pressure or a neurological disorder, based on the abnormalities they come across in your eyes. So if the care his patients are receiving from other providers for those conditions is altered considerably by some sort of policy change, it most certainly does affect him.

They also have higher fixed costs than a lot of specialist physicians do because the equipment they use for exams and refraction is quite expensive.

Why is an Indiana Rep. posting a letter that was written to Senator King of Maine?

So, he's complaining about having to do his job well and efficiency? I think that's too bad. Roll Eyes

There must be something in the water down at the ophthalmology school.
