I'm a cat person.  Dogs can be good sometimes, though.

Own one of each and love them both. Always considered myself a cat person, but I like both a lot in their respective ways.

Dogs. German Shepherds and Beagles to be exact. (German Shepherd-BeagleI would be my favorite mix, after Lab-Pitt) I know very little of cats, but they're okay to a point.

Cats. Seeing as they actually have a personality and don't just bark, sh**t, and slobber.

Cats aren't bad, but I don't know why anyone who could have a dog instead wouldn't get a dog instead.

It's pretty easy...

I'm a cat person. I like dogs as well, but pretty much only larger dogs. Small dogs are practically useless.

Cats (D). I don't have any pets, but if I did and I had to choose, it would be a cat. They're less dirty and much easier to take care of. They also don't go completely haywire if there's noise outside or if someone comes to visit.

Relatives of mine have had small dogs, and those dogs been a real mixed bag. Trained, they still have to be shushed and they still occasionally freak.

While running one time down a street to a bike trail I passed by a house where someone had let out a mini Schnauzer, I think (it was small) - they're nasty miserable ugly dogs - and the sucker came after me. I was seriously ready to kick the thing if it actually came for my ankle, but it was thankfully leashed and about hung itself, the miserable awful thing. I also had a mini Dachshund chase me one time, but it didn't go very far. It had to traverse the whole yard, and by then I was too far away.

Little dogs are the worst.  Like you said, even the "good" ones have to be controlled.  Large dogs on the other hand are generally much calmer, though much scarier to non-dog people and dangerous if they actually do go after humans.

Cats can be dicks too.  Like the black one we got from the inlaws farm 2 summers ago.
<long Angus like story deleted>
...got out of the box, ran across the dash board and back twice, scratching the hell out of me in the process, I roll the window down and physically encourage him to leave the car via it, he does.  He turns and gives me one last look of hate as runs off into random backyard.

Never heard from him again.

Exactly the opposite for me.

Big Dogs are best, followed by cats, followed by little "dogs".
